BIG AND QUICK PROFITS: Serbs planted chokeberries en masse, but now there has been a complete change in the market

Producers of this fruit, which is considered very medicinal, are forced to process the chokeberry, and only those with smaller plantations sell it fresh.

Aronia, experts say, has adapted very well to the conditions of the Valjevo region. It tolerates low temperatures well, is resistant to diseases and produces more than 10 tons per hectare. Marko Markovic from Jovanje grows 700 chokeberry seedlings on 50 acres, with four to five tons of fruit per year.

– Chokeberry is good and healing, but few people appreciate it – says Marko Markovic. – At the moment, the market for this fruit is bad, there is no organized purchase, but we manage, we place chokeberry through social networks, a few kilos each. It is better for us to sell all quantities at the same time, at a lower price, but to get the money immediately. Therefore, if someone buys 200 kilograms of jam or juice, we have to wait for him to sell his product to be able to load the chokeberry.

SALE FROM THE THRESHOLD

There is practically no interest from producers in cultivating new chokeberry plantations, even in recent years the areas under this fruit have been reduced – points out Đorđe Sovilj from the Valjevo Agricultural Expert and Advisory Service. – In the Valjevo region, the chokeberry is sold at retail, from the door, and producers with a higher yield process the chokeberry into juices, jams, fruit wines, liquor, or the fruit is stored in refrigerators and then is marketed.

When they started, Markovic says, a kilo of chokeberry cost 800-1000, and now only 150-200 dinars.

– If sales were not a problem, we could fit in with this price, because there are no big investments like at the beginning, except that we pay the wages to the collectors – adds Markovic.

By the way, when chokeberry appeared in Serbia, the price per kilogram rose to 2,500 dinars. Today, many homeowners sell chokeberry for about a hundred dinars, if the buyer wants to buy it himself. Processing yields more, because a liter of pure chokeberry juice can cost up to 1,000 dinars.
