“WE TEACH CHILDREN WHERE TO RUN WHEN THREATENED …” Frequent kidnapping attempts in Kosovo, increasingly frequent house robberies, and the police DO NOT RESPOND

Two kidnapping attempts and shootings near Serbian children in enclaves near Pristina in just eight days have affected Serbian families in Kosovo and Metohija. In the villages where the incidents took place, Serbs complain that they are the target of Albanian extremists, as well as the police.

Unfortunately, the frequent bad news, which is almost identical, reminds us that the Serbs of Kosovo and Metohija live in almost constant danger. Thus, first, on September 30, unknown persons tried to kidnap an eight-year-old boy in the village of Plemenita near Obilić. The boy’s father, Predrag Vuksanović, noted that this was the third incident in which his children were intercepted and intimidated by unknown persons.

– Four people, one of whom is dark skinned, tried to drag my son into the car and told him they were my friends. I teach children and advise them how to deal with such situations. I showed them the houses of our family and friends so they could run there when someone threatened them while they were coming back from school. They are succeeding for now – Vuksanović emphasized for Kosovo online.

Then, on 4 October, there was a shooting in the schoolyard where Serbian children were found in the village of Donja Brnjica, near Pristina. The attacker fired a bullet and fortunately no one was injured. According to media reports, the incident occurred when two people approached the children and one of them pulled out a gun. After that, according to locals, the children started to flee and the attacker ran after them and fired a shot. The incident was recorded by security cameras. After a three-day search, the police arrested the perpetrator of the incident.

– The perpetrator is an Albanian, who often hung out with these young people. He is from Brnjica and confessed to the crime of which he is suspected. He was taken into police custody for up to 48 hours, after which the competent prosecutor will decide on this case – said the commander of the northern police station, Isak Ejupi, adding that the Kosovo police took the gun away from the attacker and that the case it was closed.

Unfortunately, the fears of the Kosovo and Metohija Serbs do not end with this case, as a new incident occurred the day before yesterday in the village of Babin Most, near Obilić. There was another attempt to kidnap a Serbian boy. Strangers wanted to force the 11-year-old girl into the cars, but she managed to escape and run to the nearest yard. Due to the stress she survived, the girl received medical assistance at the Prilužje Health Center. The girl’s grandfather reported the attempted kidnapping to the Kosovo police, who said there were no elements of crime in this case.

– On October 7, 2020, around 3:55 pm, the police received a phone call from a resident of the town of Babin Most about a case. The police immediately responded to the case, where according to the information provided, it is suspected that, while a minor was walking down the street near her house, at a distance of about 20 meters, an unknown car of which the girl had stopped stopped. fear – it was announced from Kosovo police.

Some police officers go to Serbian villages and punish children in playgrounds for not wearing masks. There is a case where a policeman took a children’s bicycle, put it in the official car and took it away. Then the father went to the police station to pay the fine, say the Kosovo Serbs and Metohija.

Police said that all necessary investigative actions had been taken immediately and the prosecutor had been informed of the case. It was announced that the investigation continues, but that for now there are no criminal elements.

Sadly, these are not the only incidents that cause Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, and especially near Pristina, to live in constant fear. Serbs north of the Kosovo capital complain that they are the target of Albanian attacks almost every day and have virtually no one to turn to.

– The Kosovo police in this part, north of Pristina, is an integral part of the attack against us. They do nothing and simply incite violence. Some police officers go to Serbian villages and punish children in playgrounds for not wearing masks. There is a case where a policeman took a children’s bicycle, put it in the official car and took it away. Then the father went to the police station to pay the fine. There are many incidents that are not reported out of fear. Part of our insecurity lies in the fact that we do not have our own municipality, and we should have, that we do not have a police station, that we are divided into ghettos and isolated from the world – points out one of the locals and adds that about 5,000 Serbs they live in villages north of Pristina.

There are not enough police officers to deal with the robberies.

There is a mixed Serbian-Albanian police in Gracanica, but the situation is far from secure.

– About ten days ago, a Serbian house was robbed. Last year, after a dozen robberies, citizens gathered in front of the police station and protested. In response to the protest, the police issued a statement saying that there are not enough people to solve all the robbery cases. In recent years, we feel here like after the war from 2000 to 2005, when there were daily attacks against us – emphasizes Aleksandar Gudzic, a historian from the town of Dobrotin near Gracanica.

The Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Marko Đurić, assessed that the attempt to kidnap a Serbian girl in the village of Babin Most unequivocally confirms that the campaign of intimidation of Serbs living south of Ibar, between Kosovska Mitrovica and Pristina, has escalated in recent weeks. Đurić called on the international community, primarily the countries that have the most political and security influence in Kosovo and Metohija, to stand in the way of violence, noting that this is the time to react without delay.

As he said, the aim of the organizers of these incidents is to cause fear and panic among Serbs in that part of Kosovo and Metohija, with the clear intention of forcing the Serbian people to leave their homes.

“They inhabit the surrounding towns, they come with weapons, rifles”

Unfortunately, Milisav Dakić from Gorazdevac near Peć, whose twelve-year-old son Pantelija was killed by unknown assailants on the banks of the Bistrica 17 years ago, knows best how much parental fear is due to the frequent attacks on children.

– Panta would celebrate his 29th birthday on October 8 and we still don’t know who his killers are. The situation in Gorazdevac is not pleasant either, because Albanians are increasingly inhabiting the surrounding villages, turning up here with guns and rifles. Fortunately, there have been no major incidents lately. But now they are forcing us to leave here in another way. For example, one of the neighbors received a demand for a debt for water of up to 4,000 euros, and they did not even make us that water – Milisav laments.
