The Nis group of programmers, who were arrested in late July on suspicion that they had made $ 70 million through digital fraud, had their detention extended for another two months, the Belgrade High Court announced.
According to the statement, his detention may last until January 30 of next year, or at most until extradition to the United States.
The Extrajudicial Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Belgrade – Special Department for Organized Crime is on November 30, 2020. Last year a decision that on the legal basis of article 22 paragraph 1 point 1 of the Law on International Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters , that is, due to the existence of special circumstances that indicate the danger of hiding and fleeing, it extends the detention according to US, NK, AS, AS, MM, ND and NM determined by the decision of this court of 24.7.2020. Years, end 5.8.2020. year for another 2 months and that according to this decision may last until 30.1.2021. year, on the condition that the detention cannot last longer than the execution of the extradition decision, but not more than one year from the date of the arrest – announced the High Court.
When making the decision, the Extrajudicial Criminal Chamber had in mind, they add, that in accordance with the foregoing, a decision was made on October 23, which determines the fulfillment of the preconditions for extradition to the United States to carry out the proceedings before the District Court in the Northern District of Texas.
It should be recalled that a group of young men and a pregnant woman, including citizens of Montenegro, the Philippines and Austria, all residents of Nis, were arrested at the end of July.
They are charged with the criminal offense of fraud, which, it is suspected, raised 70 million dollars through the Internet. A Texas citizen was among those duped, so the American judiciary and the FBI intervened throughout the case, assisting in the arrest action.
After one of the programmers requested to be tried in the United States, the Superior Court declared that legal conditions exist for the extradition of the others and, according to the lawyers, their human rights would be in danger in the United States, and that is why his request will be tried in Serbia.
