Miloje Popović Kavaja (July 28, 1936 – October 10, 2020), a prominent Serbian diplomat and writer, member of the Serbian Writers Association and the Adligat Association, passed away.
He graduated from the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law. He was a journalist for “Student”, “Mladost”, “Politika” (1966-1972), director of the Yugoslavia Cultural and Information Center in New York (1974-1978), general director of the Sava Center (1978-1986), secretary of foreign tourism of the Federal Government. (1986-1952) and advisor to the worldwide company DHL. President of the Cultural and Educational Association of Belgrade (1989-1982) and advisor of the Serbian Writers Association, member of the Association for Culture, Arts and International Cooperation “Adligat”, in which his legacy is located.
He is the author of the official verses of Stanislav Binicki’s national melody “March on the Drina”, which had no lyrics until 1964, and which was approved by the Binicki family. The poem was written while he was president of the “Lola” Youth Artistic and Cultural Association.
He has published more than 40 books, literary and journalistic content, including two books about the United States, books about China and South Korea, Belgrade, television stories about Serbia and Belgrade, two books about “Politics”, two collections of satirical stories, poetry collections … Latest: “The second life of Nikola Tesla” (2015); “How to Succeed in Life” (2016), “High School Memories” (2017) and “Dardanelles – 3000 Aphorisms from Author’s Tweets (2018).
His name is on the commemorative plaque of the Tesla monument in Niagara, for his contribution to its erection in 1976. He has numerous awards: the Order of People’s Merit, two Belgrade Gold Beochugs, two letters from the Belgrade Assembly on the occasion the anniversary of liberation, the Wolf Prize, the Life Charter of the Serbian Writers Association (2016), the Vracar Municipality Charter (2017). For his contribution to the Algerian Revolution, where he was in 1959, he received the Order of the Hero of the People of Algeria. From 2005 to 2015, he was president of the Serbian-Tunisian Friendship Association.
In recent years, he has been a regular contributor to “Politika”, in the Views section. He had kept a diary since 1952 (6000 pages). He took the literary pseudonym Kavaja in honor of his father, who had the “Braća Kavaja” bookstore chain before World War II.
In the legacy of the Adligat Association, one can see, among other things, an important part of its archive and personal belongings that it received for decades as a gift from important people such as JB Tito, Saddam Hussein, Kim Il Sung, etc. In the last months of his life, he worked on the preparation of extensive notes on books that he had received as gifts from prominent and famous people around the world for decades. Thanks to his commitment, the legacy of Mayor Branko Pešić was established in Adligat.
At the initiative of the Serbian Writers Association and the Adligat Association, he will be buried in the Alley of deserving citizens of Belgrade.
