Dragica Božanić (62), whose husband Mladen Božanić (49 at the time) and their son Nemanja (then 16), were abducted on the night of July 17-18, 1998 in the Drenica area of Kosovo and Metohija, and then killed, he says in an interview with Kurir that no accusation and verdict can heal anyone’s wounds.

The confirmation of the indictment against KLA leaders, including Hashim Thaci, now a former president of the so-called state of Kosovo, has shaken spirits of the past. Large numbers of Kosovo Serbs suffered from the company Thaci ran, but the families of the victims, who have been dealing with this pain for 22 years, do not look forward to events: their loved ones are not there and the pain for them, especially children, nothing can mitigate.

Božanić, from Opteruša village, Orahovac municipality, lost her husband and son. She was imprisoned herself, interrogated by the KLA, but added that she never feared for her life. That July 1998, she was only concerned that Albanians would return her youngest son Nemanja, a newly grown boy, as well as her husband, but sadly, 18 years later, in 2006, at the Merdare border crossing, she took over. of their bones.

– That night, from July 17 to 18, 1998, members of the KLA fired at our house in the town of Opterusa for hours. I think the reason was the agreement that my husband had with a councilor, an Albanian, of our place.

That Albanian came to our house and offered to my husband that if his – Albanians came for us, he would call him to protect him, and if ours – Serbs came for him, that he would call my husband. I think this was known and that is why there was an attack against us – says Dragica Božanić with a trembling voice and continues describing that fateful night:

– My husband decided to turn himself in the morning before and they took us and our neighbors to an unknown place, to a house. There they separated men and women. We were all questioned all the time, and on one occasion I said, begging the Albanians who were holding us: “Kill me and my husband, let my son go.” We were in that center for days. During all that time, I saw my son three times. The last time we sat on some stumps and when they took him away, he looked at me and said to the one who was taking him: “Don’t touch my mother.” That was my son!

Thaci will finally answer to the judge on Monday, Veselji on Tuesday

Hashim Thaci will appear before the judge on Monday at 3 pm, and a day later, on Tuesday, Kadri Veselji will also appear. Redzep Selimi will appear before the judge a day later, on Wednesday.

According to her, the women were subsequently transferred to other places and since then the wife and son have not been seen again. The Albanians accompanied her through the villages as a prisoner, and she was rescued by the forces of the international community, who transferred her to the Red Cross facilities in Pristina.

– In the end, I ended up in Vrnjačka Banja with my relatives, and then in Mladenovac, where I still live today. In 2006, the Belgrade association informed me that they had found the bones (of his wife and son). I took his bones in 2006 at the Merdare crossing and buried them in Orlovača, Belgrade, but I don’t think they are. I left it to God.

Bozanic says the kidnapping and murder of her husband and son was a trial in Kosovo, and that some were convicted.

Williamson, the former chief prosecutor The indictments are a big step forward

Clint Williamson, former chief prosecutor of the EU Special Investigation Task Force, said that the confirmation of the indictment against Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veselji, Recep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi for crimes against humanity and war crimes was a major step forward in the search for justice for crime victims. committed during the Kosovo conflict. Williamson claimed that the victims, including Serbs, Roma and other minorities in Kosovo, as well as disloyal Albanians, have been waiting patiently for years for the perpetrators to answer for them.

– What does that mean for me? Are you and my son going out? asks this brave woman sadly.

The bones of Mladen and Nemanja Božanić were found in Volujak, near Klina. The indictment against Thaci and other KLA leaders includes the torture of 407 people in 34 illegal arrests in Kosovo and Albania, of which at least 98 were brutally murdered. In the list of murder sites in the indictment, most of the victims (24) were found at the Volujak site, near Klina, where KLA members fired at Serbs abducted in 1998.
