The executioner of the Zemun criminal clan, a man who sowed death on the asphalt of Belgrade, is one of the most closely guarded prisoners in Serbia. Sretko Kalinic (47), alias Zver i Beli, who was sentenced to 30 years for the murder of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic (48) and 40 years for the crimes of the Zemun clan, is serving his sentence in the “Zabela” of Pozarevac and, for security reasons, he is alone in a cell. Kalinic is one of the most guarded prisoners of the “Zabela” Seventh Pavilion, to which he was transferred almost five years ago, and he goes out for a walk alone.
– Play sports, train and read a lot. He was one of the best Croatian athletes before the war. In the prison yard, which is the size of a basketball court, he runs a lot and trains in the room. As we learned, before the coronavirus pandemic, Kalinic had the right to go for a walk when the members of the “red berets”, Nenad Bujosevic Rambo and Branko Bercek, were abolished after the state of emergency.

The Belgrade Court of Appeal upheld his 40-year prison sentence for a series of murders, kidnappings and other crimes, which he committed as a member of the Zemun clan. The court determined that he was direct executor of liquidation Todor Gardašević, Sredoje and Zoran Šljukić, Zoran Uskoković Skolet, Miloš Stevanović, Jovan Guzijan Cuner, Rade Cvetić and Ivica Nikolić.
He pointed out that the aforementioned petition was presented before 2015, and that in the meantime he was informed that the case was taken up by the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights, which in the first instance discusses only very important issues and interpretations of the European Convention of Human Rights. .
– The petition was presented because we proved that on the critical day he was not in front of the Serbian Government building (where the Prime Minister was assassinated), but in another place. This was confirmed, among other things, during the test by the driver of the tram on line 9, who did not even drive his line that day, but as a replacement. Kalinic never said who shot the prime minister, because he was not present, the defense attorney stressed.

Kalinic has repeatedly shown in custody that he is ready for anything. He tried to escape arrest in the Central Prison, and shot Sreten Jocic, better known as Joca Amsterdam, with a tile that he threw from his bathroom in the cell while the guards escorted him. A razor and rope woven from a torn T-shirt were found in his cell a few years ago, our source said.
According to the indictment, Kalinic was in the “Passat” at the time of Prime Minister Djindjic’s assassination, in front of the Institute of Photogrammetry building, from where JSO member Zvezdan Jovanovic Zveki fired at Djindjic. It was supposed to provide fire support if there was an armed confrontation.
After seven years on the run, Kalinic was wounded by Milos Simovic on June 8, 2010 in Zagreb. Two fake Croatian passports were found near him, and it is interesting that he introduced himself to the man who found him after the shooting with his real name. He was taken to the Zagreb hospital with two bullets in the chest, but was not immediately arrested because he was not wanted in Croatia. He was extradited to Serbia on August 25, 2010, as the first Croatian citizen to be surrendered under the Mutual Extradition of Suspected Citizens Agreement between Serbia and Croatia.
