Former soccer player Sreten Davidović, one of the best defenders of his generation from the then great Yugoslavia, has died at the age of 89.
He was also a member of the old state national team, and left the deepest mark by playing for BSK (later OFK Belgrade), where he established himself.
Davidović was born in 1931 in Bajina Bašta, and began his career at Železničar in Belgrade, for which he played until 1951.
He then joined the ranks of BSK, which later became OFK Belgrade and won two Yugoslav Cups with that club, in 1953 and 1955. After a long and successful career in Karaburma, he left for Croatia.
He played for Karlovac in 1960 and spent the last two seasons of his career there, and was the best member of the team that competed in the Second Federal League of Yugoslavia at that time.
He played five games for the young SFRY team, two for the Yugoslavia “B” team, and made his debut for the Yugoslavia team on January 16, 1953 against Egypt.
He did not leave a deeper mark on the national team, having had Zlatko Tchaikovsky and Vujadin Boskov as competitors at the peak of his career.
