The growing interest of domestic tourists for summer holidays in the country has reduced the decline in tourist traffic to destinations abroad and have practically saved the summer season, says the Tourism Organization of Serbia (TOS).

The number of overnight stays by domestic tourists in July compared to the same month last year decreased only 3.2 percent, in June the decrease was 17 percent and it is important that the confidence of our citizens to travel in the country come back, the TOS director told Tanjug. Marija Labović.

Based on the overnight stays, domestic tourists were most interested in the spa and mountain locations in July: Vrnjacka Banja, Sokobanja, Zlatibor, Tara, Kopaonik, Divcibare, Stara Planina.

People were looking for a stay in nature in ethnic villages, and those are the destinations that registered an increase in relation to the overnight stays made last year, explains Labović.

In Serbia in July 2020, compared to July 2019, the total number of tourist arrivals was 52 percent lower, 42 percent for overnight stays, taking into account that the arrival of foreign tourists it has been drastically reduced. Labovic says the decline is somewhat less compared to other European countries, because many posted a 70 percent decline.

The number of overnight stays by foreign tourists is still at an extremely low level, because the epidemiological situation, as well as the travel conditions, are subject to change.

He states that there is no official data for August yet, but that field data shows that the occupancy of tourist destinations in the country is even better, and that more rooms were searched last month.

The Vrnjacka Banja tourism organization says July is a record month and they noticed an increase in the number of guests by 16 percent. 150,000 overnight stays were made, that is, 40,000 visits. They had most of the guests from Belgrade and Vojvodina places.

The Sokobanja Tourism Organization told Tanjug that the visit during the summer months of this year is 20% better than in the same period last year. As they say, lately there are more and more older people and families with younger children, who come from urban areas for recreation, rest and fresh air.
