In the latest incident in Serbia, TV N1 journalist Zaklina Tatalovic was attacked again, the SafeJournalists network announced. Direct and indirect threats were sent in a direct message to journalist H1 on Instagram.
On November 11, Tatalović received verbal threats in a direct message via Instagram. While one message said “you will be beaten”, others consisted of various indirect threats and insults. Tatalovic contacted the Serbian Independent Association of Journalists (NUNS), which will file a criminal complaint on his behalf with the Special Prosecutor for High-Tech Crimes.
“When I was checking the inbox on Instagram, I saw the messages. I was confused because it was not immediately clear to me what it was about,” Tatalovic told SafeJournalists, explaining that she took screenshots of the disputed messages and contacted their media and informed NUNS about me.
Tatalovc has been targeted many times over the past year, either through social media or through print and electronic tabloids. Just two days before this incident, the Serbian Independent Association of Journalists (NUNS) issued a public statement condemning the sexist attack and insults against Zaklina Tatalovic on the hit program of one of the national television stations. On that occasion, the Association called on the competent authorities to react.
“Based on our experience, we do not expect our institutions to react to such verbal attacks and insults on national television. The lack of reactions generally leads to an increase in threats like the one received by colleague Tatalovic and, in the worst case, to physical attacks, “Zeljko said. Bodrozic, president of NUNS, added that NUNS is filing criminal charges on behalf of Jacqueline Tatalovic against an unidentified person who threatened and will insist on solving this case and the appropriate sanctions.
The SafeJournalists network, representing more than 8,200 media professionals in the Western Balkans, joins its member NUNS in condemning the threat to Zaklina Tatalovic.
We are particularly concerned by reports that Tatalovic was previously attacked in national and online media and threatened without an adequate response from authorities, the SafeJournalists network said, urging Serbian authorities to investigate and identify the person who threatened Tatalovic. . We expect an appropriate sanction that will have a clear deterrent effect, the statement read.
It is added that any attack on journalists is an attack on the public interest, democracy and the rights of all citizens.
The Safejournalists network is made up of the Kosovo Journalists Association, the Macedonia Journalists Association, the BH Journalists Association, the Croatian Journalists Association, the Independent Association of Serbian Journalists and the Montenegro Media Union.
