The television presenter Dejan Andjus was acquitted yesterday by the verdict of first instance of the High Court of Belgrade of the accusation that in June 2017 he tried to extort 30,000 euros from the businessman Milojica Markovic, owner of the company “Srem put”. The crime for which Andjus was a suspect by law is punishable by between three and 12 years in prison.
Explaining the verdict, the judge said that during the process it was not proven that Andjus committed the crime charged in the accusation. He added that the verdict was based mainly on the testimony of the aggrieved Markovic, who said during his testimony in court that he had an agreement with Andjus regarding the delivery of money. The businessman also said that he denounced the television journalist out of fear, that is, because he presented the messages he received from him on his programs.
As the media wrote after the indictment against Andjus was brought, the host helped Markovic hire a certain job by introducing him to a potential business partner. Following the successful settlement, Andjus demanded the payment of a multi-million dollar sum on behalf of the mediation, although there was no prior agreement on this.
On suspicion of attempting to extort money from a businessman, Andjus was arrested in June 2017 and spent more than a month in custody. He said publicly on several occasions that his affair with the businessman was “packaged.”
Vesna Golubović, a lawyer for the accused television host, said after the verdict was delivered that she was satisfied with the court’s decision, then added that her client had been demonized from the beginning of the proceedings.
– I thank all the journalists who came to pronounce the verdict, considering that this case was not covered by the media. My client Dejan Andjus has been accused without merit and I simply cannot believe that such an accusation has passed the control of the court. The court acted professionally and made the only fair and legal decision, lawyer Golubović said.
He added that his client had suffered a great injustice since his arrest.
– From the moment of his arrest, Andjus was demonized in the tabloids and suffered great damage in all this time – he said.
The released presenter was visibly in the mood after the trial, but declined to comment to the media.
