Orthodox believers celebrate Christmas on January 7 in remembrance of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world. It is a festival of the birth of a new life, which is marked by the most beautiful religious customs and rituals among Serbs.
No holiday contains more popular customs than have been considered Christmas to this day. The most common are: putting on Christmas Eve, mixing garlic, roasting pechenitsa, mirbožanje, laying, thatching, squawking and peeking … At Christmas, people greet each other with “Christ is born!” And “He was really born!”
On the first day of Christmas, he doesn’t go anywhere from home, but the family enjoys lunch and a warm family atmosphere. Christmas lunch is the first greasy lunch after a long fast and it is always rich and varied, but it is marked by two indispensable elements: garlic and pechenitsa. Lunch is the most solemn time of Christmas. According to popular belief, the Christmas table should be rich. The rule was that at Christmas everyone in the family ate and drank well.
