New Party leader Zoran Zivkovic and former diplomat Milan St. Protic believe it is no coincidence that President Aleksandar Vucic announced the president for the composition of the new government on the 20th anniversary of October 5. At the H1 show, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the great demonstrations in Belgrade, which ended the government of Slobodan Milosevic, they said that it was an important day in the history of Serbia. Zarko Korac, the former deputy prime minister, denied public stories that there was an agreement between the DOS leader and the army and police.

“It was probably important that the president was on October 5 (announcing the new prime minister) because it is quite complex, because he thought that today would overshadow his personality, so today he announced that the prime minister will be Ana Brnabic,” says Protic.

Zivkovic also says that it is no coincidence that Vucic announced the name of the designated prime minister today. He says that, as far as he is concerned, the only important day since October 5 in the history of Serbia is September 24 of the same year, when the elections were held and Slobodan Milosevic was defeated.

“On October 5, it was just ‘additional works’ because we caught him stealing, we had to bring in 200,000 people,” Zivkovic said.

He stressed that preparations for the October 5 elections and the removal of Milosevic began much earlier.

“And on election day, we had option B, and if he steals again, there was a bit of spontaneity,” Zivkovic said, but emphasized that when 200,000 people come to you, you can’t prepare everything.

“It was not an idea to go into the Assembly and burn,” Zivkovic said, adding that the DS presidency had already conducted a survey of 3,500,000 respondents in March 2000 on who could defeat Milosevic.

“We already had a party candidate for the presidency at that time, we had satellite phones just before election day, if Milosevic turns off the electricity so we can communicate with phones that have batteries,” he said.

He recalled that after October 5, we had two separate opposition currents: one led by Vojislav Kostunica, who later became prime minister, and those who wanted a radical break with the previous government, led by Zoran Djindjic.

“The fact that the dirty government has returned (think of the current SNS) is the fault of the people in our ranks who, from 2004 to 2012, allowed the fact that the ideas were on October 5 to be compromised,” he said. Zivkovic.

Former diplomat, historian and lawyer Milan St. Protic affirms that October 5 “would change nothing in the world, and it would change nothing in their behavior.”

“Why October 5 did not materialize in what we all wanted is a grim story, but it is a symbol that citizens must not reconcile with electoral violence,” says Protić.

Speaking about the time after October 5, he says: “History will remember Vojislav Kostunica because he defeated Milosevic, and Djindjic because he is a martyr. We have all been forgotten.”

Zivkovic stated that as he was coming he was stopped by the police in Bubanj Potok and told them: “If I die today, I will be a national hero and if you die today, you will be a scoundrel.”

He believes that October 5 will not be forgotten, and that he also has an emotional attitude towards everything that happened then.

“I wore this jacket, pants and shoes that day, and I have always worn them that day ever since, but not only because of that, but also because Serbia showed then that they can change something,” Zivkovic said.

Korac: There was no agreement between the DOS leader and the police and army.

Zarko Korac, former Deputy Prime Minister and former Chairman of the Zoran Djindjic Assassination Investigation Commission, told H1 that he was happy to have participated in the October 5 changes and was proud to be part of the people who made the changes.

“It was hard work … Months before, we organized rallies in Serbia, we made DOS lists for all municipalities in Serbia to prepare observers because there was a danger that the SPS would steal the elections,” Korac said, adding that he believed that Today’s opposition had to move more around Serbia, as well as have a clearer agenda, and not rely on an online campaign and messages broadcast by rare media in Serbia.

Recalling October 5, he said that the most critical moment was between 12 and 13 hours when people entered parliament.

“We gave an ultimatum at 12 o’clock and when 12 o’clock arrived I said – we will have to enter the Assembly ourselves, because we won the elections. Dacic says it was a coup, it was not a coup, we won the elections. That moment between 12 and 1 o’clock is a moment of greatest tension because I was afraid that those in the Assembly would start firing, ”said Korac.

He denied the stories that there was an agreement between the DOS leader and the army and the police not to attack those gathered, but that the security services estimated that there were too many people on the street and that the army could not do anything in that situation.

Ilic: We were fully equipped, with mechanization and we said: now or never

Velimir Ilic, president of New Serbia and one of the leaders of DOS, says that a revolt was created at the moment when Milosevic did not accept the victory of Kostunica, and that people already then began to gather in the squares. “We (in Cacak) decided to go The morning of October 5 in Belgrade, the police found out, they made an uncomfortable barricade in Majdan in Rudnik in the strait, the second in Celije, which was extremely strong, the third in the forest of Lipovačka, but the people had so much will and strength, these young people, people lifted those trucks with their hands, they overturned the trucks. “

Ilic said they “cleaned it all the time” and “hooked up the machinery a bit” to help them. “Water tanks, when they throw tear gas to wet our shirts and put them on our faces, loaders, bulldozers, low-loader trailers … We were fully equipped and we just said, now or never,” he said.

People were gathering on the road, 10 to 20 thousand people were waiting for us in the Petlovo brdo, they were all coming in trucks, buses, rivers of people were also coming from other directions, Ilić recalls.

He says that the confrontation was fierce and adds that it is impossible to defend something when there is a critical mass, recalling “that all of Serbia has risen.”

When asked if they will be remembered as the generation that overthrew Milosevic or as the one that played a historic opportunity, he said: “So what do I know? We will be remembered as the generation that managed to overthrow a dictatorial regime, peacefully, without war. ., victims … And after we couldn’t keep it up, it’s the fault of those who screwed up with us, betrayed the whole story, and brought back the ones we drove. “

He says he is personally proud. As far as I could, I pushed, then a great team appeared, which had an interesting ideology, he said.

When asked if he betrayed the people he took on October 5, he said that he personally believes he is not, but that he feels empty because he did not get what he wanted. “We should have been more acute, we bet on the possibility of entering the EU … I see that this is not the Serbia that I imagined, the young generations have a lot of work to do, to create a serious state, with serious institutions,” he concluded Ilic.
