Vladimir Jugović’s story about the days he spent in the army in the elite parachute unit number 63 caused a lot of public attention. Especially his relationship with Sergeant Major Hasan Omerović, with whom he trained during his military service. The messenger found Juga’s superior in Nis, where he still lives today.

– I read on the Internet everything that Juga told the Kurir about the 63rd Parachute Brigade. The government is the pride of our unit, all of us paratroopers, one guy for example, from the first to the last day of military service. He never asked for privileges, he was a good soldier, he fulfilled all his duties without arguing – Hasan Omerović said for Kurir, and then added:

– Vladimir Jugović will always be part of our unit!

The way Hasan Omerović and Vladimir Jugović met was special.

– When he arrived at the unit, he was assigned to the parachute packing squad. He was short, but when I saw his legs I knew immediately that he was a soccer player. I ask him, where does he play? It says: in Zvezda! I told him that I have never heard of you and I am supporting Zvezda. (laughs) Oh, he’ll tell me, you’ll just listen to him. He was sympathetic to me at first glance.

The former officer then confirms Jugović’s story that he was the one who deserved Vladimir to remain in the paratroopers throughout the military service.

– After three months, Jugović should have received a transfer. I met him twice in the military circle and asked him if he would like to stay in Nis. The answer was yes. Later, he went through all the special training on the ground, the only thing he didn’t do was jump, even though he felt like it. He wanted to jump off the plane, but he and I were scared for his career, so we gave up.

Hasan Omerović reveals with emotion that he would very much like to see Jugović again.

– I’d like to see him again. To hug him. That is my great and only wish. We last saw each other 20 years ago, at the Hyatt Hotel. He’s a good boy. Size! I gave him a red beret, he was happy and proud of it. My wish is that you from Kurir connect us, that we do a joint interview.

The legendary Serbian footballer awaits recognition from the 63rd Parachute Brigade.

– It remained in our hearts, especially the part of the elderly who were in the unit at that time. It is always welcome. I say publicly that he will be invited by us veterans and will be delivered a special letter.

The Red Star leaders visited Vladimir Jugović at Niš’s barracks.

– I remember that Dzajic and Cvetkovic came once, I think he was also the late Shekularac. They asked me to allow Jugović to train with Radnički from Niš. For me, as a huge Red Star fan, that wasn’t a problem. However, after three training sessions, Vlada returned to the barracks disappointed. He says it is not that. (laughs) I’d rather stay to train judo, wrestling, and the gym with me. And it worked. When he got to the army he lifted 50 kilos from the bank, and when he dropped 120 kilos.

Jugović revealed to us that he was on a military shooting exercise when Red Star hosted Milan in 1988. Hasan Omerović recalled what they were doing in the barracks when the first match was played in Italy.

– I was on duty that night, I tell Jugović to set the TV to see Milan and Zvezda in the Champions Cup. Milan is terrible, there are Gulit, Rijkaard, Van Basten, many players from the Italian team … And, Jugović tells me, I will play against them. (laughs) I didn’t believe him, I was joking with him. But in the end, he succeeded. He always believed in himself and knew what he wanted in life.

The photo of Zabljak in the snow is from Hasan Omerovic’s personal archive.

– Uh, I intimidated him a lot there. (laughs) But he learned to ski, he did great. We skied naked to the waist and then decided to immortalize it. This is how I remember it.

The 63rd Parachute Brigade also had its own soccer team that Vladimir Jugović played for.

– Well, those are wonderful memories. I remember our soccer days, we had our team as a unit. Play played for parachute number 63 in a workers game. He carried the ball from goal to goal. I remember that, like yesterday, he scored nine goals in one game. And so we won the tournament. Opponents ask who is this kid of yours. Where does he play? I say, Zvezda reinforcement. (Laughter)

Vladimir Jugović was supposed to be a member of Chile’s YU soccer golden generation, but did not attend the World Cup due to injury.

– He told me that he broke his big toe and that’s why he didn’t go to Chile. And they became world champions. Hey, it’s a shame I didn’t play there – Omerović declared.
