Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates Saint Arsenij Sremec, the Serbian Archbishop and the most responsible student of Saint Sava, who dealt with the autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
His birthplace is north of the Sava and the Danube, between the rivers mentioned, and some mention that it is Bingula or Dabar near Stari Slankamen.
The young Arsenije loved the monastic life from his youth, and found a model in the Orthodox monastery of Saint Demetrius in Sremska Mitrovica, which in the sources of the Roman Curia is marked as full of Greek monks and a hotbed of schismatic delusions.
Saint Arsenije Sremac took over the responsibility of managing the young Serbian archbishopric, which was important for the status and life of the Serbian population in the Middle Ages.
In the collection of Lives of Serbian Kings and Archbishops, there is an extensive hagiography of St. Arsenija, written by Archbishop Danilo II. As the writer intended to show the devout and ascetic character of another Serbian archbishop, the text still contains relatively few positive historical facts that would speak of the Arsenij administration on the church and the ecclesiastical-political environment.
He inherited the “throne of the archbishops of the Serbian and maritime lands” in 1233, in the personal occupation of Saint Sava, as he retired and left on his second trip to the Holy Land.
Archbishop Arsenije built the church of St. Apostle in Peja, determining that it was the seat of the Serbian church instead of Zice, because Zice was too exposed to attack by enemy armies. Together with King Vladislav, he took charge of the transfer of the relics of St. Sava from Trnovo to Serbia and participated in the transfer of the chair of the bishops of Ston from the Monastery of the Blessed Mother of God in Ston to the monastery of St. Peter and Paul in Lim.
Due to his illness, he retired from the head of the Serbian church in 1263 and died three years later in the Crnča convent in Žička, also in Lim. He was buried at his investiture, the Church of the Holy Apostle in Peja.
Prayer on this day is believed to help all who ask Saint Arsenij for health, and it is believed that in this way he will protect his family and loved ones from all misfortunes and plagues.
