That fateful 1990, Igor Dikić from Belgrade, was a 19-year-old when he received a call for military service in Varaždin, and what usually happened was: farewell to the army and joy, which his cousin Predrag Milošević sent with his video. camera.
What was supposed to be just military service became so much more than that. The disintegration of Yugoslavia began, the secession of Croatia, and when Igor’s military service finally ended, Predrag turned the camera back on and created material for an authentic film called “I swear,” writes “Prva.”
– I got to that farewell, I brought a camera like I always do. In principle, I do not know why I use it, but I always use it – says the author of the recordings.
Igor Dikić, also the accidental actor and protagonist of the story of this film, could not guess at those moments what would happen in the next few months.
– In those years, you don’t think about what you can do, like when you were little, then your mom tells you not to cross the street in red – what’s going to happen to me? Even then, I did not have the experience of all that, but the most terrible thing is what could have happened, because it happened to people who were much worse than us – Igor begins with “Prva”.
He adds that he, like his comrades in arms at the time, had no idea about political events or that Yugoslavia was crumbling.
– When the friends who were with us, soldiers of Croatian nationality, began to flee and jump over the wire, even then we were not very clear what would happen. You see that something is cooking, something is happening, but not even in your little brain there is a war or everything that will happen afterwards – says Igor for “Prva”.
He thought he was going to “do” the obligation for 12 months, after that he was free to do whatever he wanted in life and that he took that obligation off his neck.
– My mother wanted me to return in peace, and I replied: “Well, I will return in peace, but nobody knows what will happen in the middle. And everything happened, happened – Croatia has definitely decided to separate, the army was an obstacle to their idea. 13 days is less important if you have a generator or you have water, because you are mostly in the trench, because they surrounded the building, so there was no more external guard, but internal, part on guard, part on devices, since the connection is still maintains, ”Dikić testified.
He says that intrusions into the building where they were staying were frequent, from various sides in an attempt to understand the reaction of the soldiers inside.
– One of those situations was that – I kept the man in sight. Both then and now, when I think about it, I feel uncomfortable, to put it mildly. If someone’s life depended on you, I would not want to be in a situation where my life depends on someone and I would like him to think the same way I thought – explains to “Prva”
The author of the recordings, Predrag, after Igor returned home, turned the record button back on and listened to one of the most traumatic experiences of his life.
– By imposing that memory on him, he experienced the trauma of that memory. It is difficult, simple, very difficult. He gave me an authentic statement, an authentic version of everything that really happened there and in what way and how it worked. It was shocking to see him in that rather long interview. His experience in that conversation was obviously difficult, recalls Predrag Milosevic.
– In the end, they had to speak, I just don’t know why they didn’t speak right away, instead of so many people from both sides (later in Bosnia), so many people died and lost their legs – says Igor.
You find it more difficult when you see how your family members experienced the whole situation.
– I stuttered, I whispered, all the speech defects that could have happened to me – happened for a reason unknown to me at the time. And I experienced it through my dreams, because it wasn’t doing much during the day. I tried to continue my life, where it left off before the army – concludes for “Prva”.
