Salvatore, whose case was declared negligent homicide by the court, escaped from jail. Namely, he, his granddaughter Chloe, and their family (18 months) traveled on a cruise ship in July 2019. Salvatore dropped his granddaughter. The girl did not survive the fall. He said he did not know that the care in the game room was open. The girl’s parents sued the cruise ship “Royal Caribbean”, reports the “Daily Mail”.

Salvatore was sentenced to three years of probation on Monday.

The unfortunate event occurred when the cruise ship was anchored in Puerto Rico. Salvatore said he picked up his granddaughter, before she fell, to hit the window. The girl used to do that when she saw her brother when he played hockey.

Attorney Michael Winklem said Salvator would serve his sentence at home. The girl’s parents, Alan and Kimberly, sued the cruise ship, but the process is still ongoing.

Salvatore told the Daily Mail that he was angry and relieved.

“I really thought it was glass. I am relieved not to go to jail. I am relieved that my family and I can close this chapter. Angry at the Royal Caribbbean because the window couldn’t be opened. I was convinced it was glass .. in front of me. There was nothing to indicate it was open. I miss Chloe so much, “Salvatore said.

According to the court report, Salvatore wanted to support the girl against the window to hit the glass, but Chloe fell from a height of 45 meters and died.

The windows have greenish-blue handles, but Salvatore is color blind and didn’t notice the difference between open and closed windows.

The company that owns the cruise ship tried unsuccessfully to dismiss the case by publishing images from a security camera. I mean, they wanted to show that Salvatore poked his head out the other side of the window when the accident happened, meaning he knew from them that there was no glass.

“Chloe left. Nothing worse can happen to me than what already happened to me,” Salvatore concluded.
