Gornji Milanovac – For months, in the village of Gornji Branetići, near Gornji Milanovac, tons of potatoes have been stored. Dissatisfied farmers only ten days ago were convinced that they would have to throw away most of their crops, because there was no demand, yet the producers were saved at the last minute. The Ministry of Agriculture facilitated the buyer, so the first potato trucks were loaded in this village at the foot of Rudnik, which will find a place on the shelves of Serbian markets.
– The situation has never been worse. They thought we were going to throw this year’s crop to the pigs. After learning about our great problem, on which our survival in the village really depends, they came to us from the corresponding ministry, they contacted us and today a part of the family is burdened. 10 tons of potatoes remained and we received the promise that we will soon conclude cooperation with large market chains such as “Lidl” operating in Serbia, said Djordje Vasović, a potato producer from the village of Gornji Branetići.
Buying potatoes for these farmers is a light at the end of the tunnel and an incentive to continue production next year. The mountain potatoes from this area are recognized in the market as being of very high quality and are an ace up the sleeve of hard-working hosts. What you have to do is direct your sales, because so far they have done so exclusively through the markets, and that is exactly what the Ministry of Agriculture is working on. The plan is to enter into contracts for the purchase of potatoes with markets throughout Serbia and, in addition to farmers in Gornji Milanovac, the authorities are negotiating with producers in Ivanjica, Nova Varoš and Prijepolje.
– This is one of the worst years for potatoes, but we are aware that this is not only the case in Serbia, but the whole of Europe, which is awash in these vegetables. That is why the demand and the price are low. We hope that this year will not happen again, because last year was quite satisfactory. We hope to save this year’s crop with the help of the ministry, but also to secure placement in the next period. Because imported potatoes can never be better than domestic ones, emphasized Milos Kostic, a potato producer from the town of Polom in Gornji Milnovac.
More than 600,000 tons are produced annually in Serbia, and the best quality is achieved with its production at higher altitudes, 300-600 meters, especially above 600 meters, and that is why this vegetable grown in western Serbia is considered to be of the highest quality. Although the best seed and commercial potatoes are produced at altitudes above 900 meters, the Jelica Mountains and the surroundings of Guca are cited as examples.
