Today, the Trial Chamber of the Krusevac High Court sentenced the defendants for the attack on the Vice Presidents of the Freedom and Justice Party, Borko Stefanovic and Boban Jovanovic, to prison terms of four and three and a half years prison, respectively.

Miloš Šaponjić was sentenced to a single sentence of four years in prison for violent behavior, which inflicted serious bodily injury on him and assaulted an official, namely police officer Dejan Palibrko.

Marko Zivkovic and Danijel Gmijovic were each sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

The attack on Stefanović and Boban Jovanović took place on November 23, 2018, in front of the local Rasadnik community in Kruševac, where they participated in the political rostrum of the Serbian left.

Judge Dragan Zdravković assessed, when pronouncing the verdict, that the prosecutor proved that the three defendants attacked the participants with their hands and feet and inflicted serious bodily injuries on them, as well as the official on duty.

He added that the penalties were somewhat lower, because they were judged according to the old law.

“According to the new criminal law, which came into force on December 1, 2019, significantly higher penalties are foreseen for the aforementioned acts,” added Zdravković, noting that the verdicts handed down have a “repressive but also preventive effect.”

At a hearing held last Thursday, the Krusevac superior prosecution requested a sentence of four and a half years in prison for Shaponjic and three and a half years for Zivkovic and Gmijovic.

“We are not satisfied with the verdict because we believe it was an attempt to kill Borko Stefanović and me. The fines are astonishingly small, especially since an official was also attacked. This verdict sends a message that they can walk through my city, our city and commit crimes with impunity, “said Boban Jovanović, who attended the delivery of the first instance verdict in the Kruševac High Court.

The defendants, their defense attorney, as well as Borko Stefanović and his attorney Vladimir Todorić did not attend the sentencing.
