On this day in 1939, one of the best boxers in Yugoslavia, Dragiša Stanković Čelik, was born.
Stanković was born in Vlasotince and grew up in Niš, where he showed his boxing skills and announced great feats.
He started coaching the sport at age 17, while within a year he was the first team captain and independently boxed the seventh game with the then two-time state champion.
He started at Radnički Niš and then boxed for Partizan. He had 520 fights in his career and won up to 512 times, while coming out of just eight matches as an underdog. In his professional career, he added 20 matches and all victories, while finishing 19 by knockout.
He was famous and was often part of famous society, spending time with actors, politicians, singers, businessmen …
After finishing her boxing career, Dragisa Stankovic opened a restaurant, then had a chain of stores, as well as a coffee industry named after her.
During the 1999 bombing, he donated up to 30 tons of coffee to the army and showed patriotism in action by forgoing his pension in favor of the state.
Apart from actors, singers and others, he also hung out with ferocious guys on the asphalt of Belgrade. For a time, he trained in Germany with the famous Ljubo Zemunc.
He also had an offer from promoter and manager Bruno Miller to sell the fight to the German champion and fall within the agreed time frame of the fight, for which he would win 250,000 marks, which the famous Celik rejected.
And Stanković showed his rejection in action by knocking out the German by throwing him against the ropes, after which he ended his career in 1970. The German press covered the match with the headlines “Wild Yugoslav beat Kukec”.
Dragisa Stankovic had no physical weaknesses, but one that can be characterized as “internal” is the game. However, he was very lucky, so he was twice the winner of the main prize in the Lotto game in Yugoslavia and even 14 times in a row the main prize in the sports forecast, so thanks to him, the winning fund was reduced later.
