The first lawsuit against the NATO alliance in Serbia for the 1999 depleted uranium bombing, which caused many citizens to become ill with cancer, was filed today at 11 am in the High Court of Belgrade.
The lawsuit was brought by the Niš law firm “Aleksić” on behalf of a retired Belgrade police officer, who was in Kosovo and Metohija during the bombing, and who later contracted cancer, it claims, for the same reason .
– We have filed a lawsuit against the NATO pact for compensation for material and moral damage suffered by our citizens as a result of the bombing. During airstrikes against the country in 1999, 15 tons of depleted uranium bombs were delivered and thousands of people fell ill with cancer. We have been working on these demands for over four years in consultation with world experts, from whom we have received full support. Our experts have shown the connection between sarcoma, when this cop got sick, and ionizing radiation from depleted uranium. We filed the lawsuit in the amount of 100,000 euros due to high court fees – lawyer Srdjan Aleksic told Kurir and added that there is a proposal to solve everything through mediation, but also for NATO to clear the territory of the remaining ammunition:
– The High Court now has six months to present this claim to NATO headquarters in Brussels, and if the High Court rejects our claim, which I doubt, we will seek justice in Strasbourg. The right to life and health must be above all! Our courts must now defend with dignity and courage the right to life of their citizens. For now, we have 2,300 applications from citizens who want to sue NATO. Without a doubt, the number will be higher, so we have to combine and shape all of that to show what my colleagues from Italy are already, and that is the presence of heavy metals in patients. This is a direct indication that they suffer from depleted uranium. Fiore Tatalja’s Italian lawyer showed that 70 soldiers fell ill for this reason. The Nis Law Firm “Aleksić” will finance the first five fees before our courts in Novi Sad, Belgrade, Niš, Kragujevac and Vranje. In Italy these taxes were not charged, while in our country they have a high price, so the lawyers will advocate that in such cases they are not charged in our country either.

- There are currently 2,300 lawsuits against NATO
- 70 Italian soldiers have been shown to be depleted in depleted uranium
