Do you know a person who travels 40 minutes one way each day just to feed an abandoned dog? Perhaps. And do you know a person with a disability who does that? Difficult. That’s just one reason why 24-year-old Marija Matić, from Kosjerić, is an exceptional girl.
When you look at his Instagram profile, he only lives like all 24-year-olds at first glance: he studies, hangs out and goes out, takes selfies. Still, their battle is daily.
At 16, Marija became ill with osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor. In February 2013, his leg was amputated up to the knee.
For most people, something like this would take away the will to live, but not Mary. Marija Matić’s life did not stop the day the doctor told her the painful information.
After four months of rehab, he managed to return to a normal lifestyle and continued to earn less.
He currently lives in the “Mika Mitrović” student residence in Belgrade, is a final year student at the Faculty of Philology and leads a very active life, although he wears an impractical mechanical prosthesis.
“I am very active, I go to the gym, I finish my studies, I work in the call center, I relax, I go out. I like to go out because music is something that fills me and makes me happy (besides singing). I try to organize my day by Maximum, I also try to go home as often as I can as I rarely see my family for obligations, “Marija told RTS.
Maria and her family tried by all means to go to the state to get a new and modern prosthesis through the health system that would make her life easier. Unfortunately, the answers have always been the same: the state cannot do it.
“Our health care system cannot afford the cost of buying an electronic prosthesis. When I spoke to a person in our health care system, they told me that there are people who have been waiting for crutches for over a year and prosthetic replacement for more. eight years old, “he said. Mary.
However, a great fighter, former soccer player Miloš Vuković, learned of Marija’s struggle, strength and will, and lost his leg after a serious car accident.
His life and his successful football career in 2015 were turned upside down in a split second. Milos, like Marija, did not give up and continued to fight and serve society as motivation.
As Milos told us, he found out about Maria by accident.
“You can say it was fate. I was sitting in a cafe in Belgrade where my good friend Ivan Stojanović works, and they had an abandoned house in the yard, and I’m going to buy food for that dog, I had enough in a few months, at what John told me: “You didn’t have to do it, a girl comes every day and feeds him, she just loves him.” He explained that it was Mary, and showed me Instagram. I asked her where Marija lives, she replied that she lives in a bedroom, which is about 40 minutes in one direction every day that a person with a mechanical prosthesis goes just to feed a dog, ”Milos told RTS.
With that, she says, Marija bought her respect: “Trust me, most of the people with the prosthesis that she has don’t get out of bed and walk 40 minutes in one direction every day because of the dog.”
“I believe in karma, and that goodness is a boomerang if it’s directed at the right people,” Milos says.
Through his organization “Focused4real”, he launched an action to raise money so that Maria could get a new prosthesis. It is an Ottobock C-leg 4 prosthesis, which costs about 40,000 euros over the counter.
“Fortunately, and with good people, I received an offer of 12,750 euros. My plan was to get Marija’s prosthesis as soon as possible, everything was ready, we are just waiting for our payment ”, says Miloš.
Many public figures joined in the fundraising action, and a special contribution was made by Red Star soccer player Vujadin Savić, who together with the “Gardisti” fan group raised up to 30 percent of the required amount.
However, as Milos says, the action is not going in the desired direction because it is difficult to reach large numbers of people. But they do not give up and invite everyone who can contribute to make Mary’s life easier, more beautiful and better.
“A new prosthesis would mean a lot to me. I could easily cope with the obstacles I face every day. Going up, down hills and stairs would not fall as hard on me. I would have a more stable gait, my back would be more relaxed and I could function during the day As I am a very active person, it would mean a lot to me, ”says Marija Matić.
Struggle, the will to live, and the selfless desire to help others adorn both Marija and Miloš. These two brave young people can serve as motivation for many to overcome all obstacles, especially in these difficult days of the coronavirus pandemic, when solidarity and compassion are indispensable for each of us.
