The Kosovo map issue, centered on the EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, Miroslav Lajcak, has rocked Brussels and the region.
Twitter burned for a day. People on those social networks, as well as some Kosovo officials, were enthusiastic about the map located in Lajcak’s office, which does not show Kosovo as a separate state.
This map sparked a veritable avalanche of comments, highlighting the tweet from Meliza Haradinaj, Kosovo’s foreign minister, who told Lajcak that the map was an indicator of his failure and that she sent him a real map of the Balkans.
Numerous attacks on social media followed, with messages to Lajcak asking him to change the map or resign, with comments that he had thus lost credibility for the dialogue.
The explanation that these were fabricated accusations was given by the spokesman for the EU Foreign Affairs Service, Kosovo was recognized by most EU countries, but five of them were not, so Peter Stano explained that the position of a united Europe has not changed: neutral status and that this can be seen on the map, urging everyone to focus on dialogue and not on false accusations.
Explanations that there is a demarcation line between Kosovo and central Serbia on the map, as well as that it does not exist between Vojvodina and central Serbia, did not help, so Lajcak himself had to justify himself to Twitter users, explaining the same. . He added that the map issue is a true indicator of the importance of dialogue on the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
More important than the map in Lajcak’s office and the scandal fabricated by Kosovo politicians is its effect on the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and other issues in the Western Balkans, as defined by its jurisdiction.
That is, Lajcak’s one-year term expires on March 31, and during those years, it was not clear what he actually did with regard to dialogue and what activities he undertook regarding “other issues in the Western Balkans”. There is no precise information in this regard, because he spent last year hiding from the media and refusing to answer journalists’ questions.
However, diplomatic circles in Brussels are reporting that they are satisfied with his engagement in the EU and that they plan to extend his mandate.
