Retired journalist Davorin Darko Ribnikar, the grandson of Vladislav Ribnikar, the founder of the daily Politika, was buried in the New Belgrade Cemetery on Friday, the Ribnikar family announced today.
His farewell was held in the circle of his closest family and several friends, at his request without a spoken word, with only a few songs that he and his wife Ljiljana loved.
Darko Ribnikar was born on March 5, 1939 in Belgrade, where he finished the mixed school of the 10th Mixed Gymnasium in Topčiderski brdo. He graduated from Belgrade University School of Law, ahead of schedule, and has a Woodrow Wilson degree in International Relations from Princeton University.
He got a job at Politika at the age of 23 and spent a full 45 years at it. He began his journalistic career in the national and Belgrade section, then joined the veteran company of Politika correspondents from abroad, Miroslav Radojčić, Aleksandar Nenadović, Đuka Julijus and others. Darko Ribnikar was a Politika correspondent in Cairo, Paris and New York.
He was the only one of the five Ribniks who worked at Politika, and who was its editor-in-chief and director at the same time.
During her tenure, Politika began to come out in color and marked her centenary. According to the family’s announcement, Darko Ribnikar is the only editor-in-chief and director of Politika, which is unique among reputable newspapers that will be fired as redundant at the end of 45 years spent in that house, without severance pay. .
Davorin Darko Ribnikar is one of the few in Politika to win three of his awards. He is also the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Festival of Reporting and Media, the People’s Certificate of Merit with the Silver Star and the Certificate of the President of Romania, which was awarded to him in 2003.
It is recalled in the statement that Politika and the editors of Politika Novine i Magazini have been suing for more than 13 years for violating the moral rights of authors because Politika, contrary to the agreement signed on March 12, 1997 with the descendants of Vladislav Ribnikar, changed the head of the list and removed the names of the founders and directors of the Ribnikar family list on the cover. In November 2020, the Supreme Court of Cassation of Serbia definitively rejected all attempts by Politika to prevent the execution of this verdict, which Darko Ribnikar discovered only a few days before his sudden death.
Politika has not yet done so, and Darko Ribnikar’s dying wish that no one from the Politika newspaper attend his farewell, despite the efforts of his wife and family, has not been fulfilled, the family said in a statement.
Darko Ribnikar left behind three grandchildren and two sons, the famous surgeon Vladislav and Darko who lives in Paris. (end) def Darko Ribnikar authorized his last major interview for the Savski Venac municipality newspaper in mid-January 2021.
