The annual production of hazelnuts in Serbia is around 2,500 tonnes, but it is still not enough to meet the needs of the Serbian market, so they are imported from European countries.
One of the solutions lies in expanding the hazelnut orchards, and the Institute for Fruit Cultivation in Čačak started selling planting material earlier this year.
We have very favorable conditions for the production of hazelnuts, this fruit species is not demanding for production. The retail price of the Institute’s seedlings is 250 dinars and with all the subsidies that our growers can receive, either from state or local governments, the price of the seedlings is around 100 to 120 dinars, which means that during standard production, around 60 thousand dinars per hectare are needed, which is not a large amount considering it is an investment for the next 50 years, “Milan Lukić, director of the Fruit Growing Institute in Čačak, told RINA.
According to him, hazelnuts can produce two to three tons of grains per hectare, and if we know that it costs around 1,000 dinars per kilogram in retail, it is a good and safe investment for all those who have land available and do not have time. stop actively. dedicated to agricultural production.
“The Italian varieties suitable for confectionery production turned out to be the best, which are of exceptional quality, good health, varietal correction and development of the root system, so the percentage of income is almost 100%. The advantage of hazelnuts is that it grows in places where other species cannot. mountainous conditions, at higher altitudes and heavier soils, “concluded Lukić.
The only downside to growing hazelnuts is that the wait is several years, but the benefits are much greater. This fruit has multiple use values, and a tree can withstand 60 to 80 years. The sale of fruits is not strictly related to certain months of the year, but the period of sale can be chosen because it does not require special storage in refrigerators.
The purchase price of hazelnuts ranges between five and seven euros, so that a hectare in which an investment of several hundred is needed, can earn between three and seven thousand euros.
