The measures are still in force, and from Monday there will be corrections, for catering companies it will not be as before the four square meters per person, but different – said the epidemiologist and member of the Crisis Staff Predrag Kon tonight, adding that this is far to be smoothing the measures.
He also spoke about the new measures and explained how effective they have been so far. Kon says there have been no talks yet about the measures for Orthodox Easter, but claimed there will be no closures.
– It is very likely that the epidemiological situation will probably improve in the four weeks that it has taken until then. By Easter, I hope that Serbian citizens of the Orthodox faith understand that this is not the time for visits and mutual contacts that we are used to. We will not prohibit movement during the holidays – he stressed.
According to him, the virus has reached its peak in Belgrade.
– It all depends on whether we get vaccinated. Where vaccination is highest, the spread of the virus first slows down and then the number of newly infected people decreases rapidly. We are giving up measures to maintain that balance, because people have to start working. Our problem is that there are still a large number of people in the hospitals. Many of them are connected to a respirator. Also, I’m afraid the death toll is higher, Kon told Kurir TV.
The epidemiologist believes that he does not perceive as a relaxation of measures that “he will work outdoors with half capacity.”
– We are waiting for the number of hospital admissions and discharges to equalize. That’s the absolute minimum at the moment so that we can really facilitate the measurements – says Kon.
Instead of getting vaccinated preventively, we get vaccinated when illnesses scare us, he adds.
– If we want to expel the virus and live normally, there must be more vaccinated. Now it is mixed. More than 700,000 people received both doses and enough time passed to create antibodies, says the epidemiologist, adding that the least vaccinated are in central Serbia and Sandzak.
“Anti-vaxers tell outright lies”
He referred to anti-vaxers, noting that there have been “since time immemorial”, but now “due to social media, their influence has increased.”
– They are people convinced of what they are saying. We cannot change your beliefs. It is scientifically proven that the vaccine has saved more lives so far in history, there is no other measure that has been so successful.
Kon also spoke about the arrest of anti-vaxer Dr. Jovana Stojković and five other anti-vaxers due to the spread of fear and panic on social media. They were trying to dissuade people from getting vaccinated. However, Kon emphasizes that the anti-vaccines are telling complete lies.
“The falsehoods also affect other vaccines”
– The use of force benefits them. I no longer have time for anti-vaccines. I took care of them for 10 years, I delved into that topic, I also wrote articles. Anti-vaccination has been around for two centuries and it is nothing new. What is new is that their influence has grown. The problem is their active action where they try to change the way they work in terms of protecting public health. So they are convinced that they are right, and they are not. There is nothing they have said so far that is scientifically sound. What they are saying are outright lies and untruths. However, these falsehoods reduce any motivation to protect yourself through vaccination. That story affects all other vaccines, not just these against the coronavirus, he stresses.
It stresses that the fear of the corona virus vaccine is completely irrational.
– They reject scientific research and say it was born. They ignore the facts and impose their own that they can never prove. I do not care at all if the vaccine is mandatory or not. What is the reason why antivaxers work when only the vaccine is recommended? Why spread falsehoods more? Kon asked, adding:
– The Agency for Medicines and Health Products has approved the vaccines used in Serbia. All vaccines are safe, they all create protection. We see vaccines working here. We have different types of vaccines and that makes it difficult to monitor them.
According to Dr. Kona, doctors who are vaccinated can pass the virus to the patient, so it is very important to understand how necessary immunization is.
– And this crown passport introduced by Belgium and those permits in Greece, but also free concerts, are all things that will be on the agenda. Now we have to get to the point where everyone can get vaccinated. We have consumed almost 2.5 million vaccines. We will also reach a situation where we will have an excess of vaccines. In such situations, it is important not to allow them to expire. Then we will have our own vaccine production. That is of strategic importance for this country – says Kon.
Vaccine three months after illness.
When asked when someone who has had a crown can be vaccinated, he says the average is three months after illness.
– That level of antibodies is not the same. There is a very high level in some after a previous infection, but it is low in some. Another way that I don’t like to talk about is the antibody test.
Opening the garden will not increase the risk of infection because “the virus spreads less outdoors than indoors.”
He also referred to the previous wave of coronavirus, but also to the behavior of people when there is a “recommendation” and a “measure”.
– We stopped the measures on June 5 and the recommended ones were maintained. At that time, it was recommended that there should be no more than 5,000 people for the soccer game. So we can talk about vaccines, they are recommended.
At the moment, the most important thing is to monitor the situation in hospitals, emphasizes Kon. About 85% of the people at the Belgrade Arena are on oxygen.
– This is the main problem, that we have many people in intensive care. It is quite certain that there are those who are waiting for the intervention. That is why there must be a smaller number of infected people, so that we can save the health system. This is a typical natural disaster, so it has the dead and the seriously ill with the consequences, and there is no destruction – emphasizes Kon.
“They think the crown will disappear if I resign”
Predrag Kon also referred to earlier announcements that crisis staff would be leaving if measures were relaxed.
– There are no concessions. My blank resignation is there and implies that something was done that was done against reason. That did not happen. Does anyone think that the crown will disappear if I resign? – Kon said.
The epidemiologist emphasized that those who control the observance of the measures should resign, and not him.
– We brought a measure to wear masks in the crosswalk, but then it was abolished. Now, around the world, that measure is in effect. Is it my fault then? Those who lead the communal police, those who exercise control, must resign, not me! Con said.
