The planting of new trees in Kalemegdan, in addition to the general public, also surprised the experts
The decision of the Belgrade authorities to plant palm trees at JKP “Zelenilo” in Kalemegdan, not far from the Cvijeta Zuzorić pavilion, occupied our general public in various ways, irritated by the frequent attempts of the current leaders to make the capital look like a summer resort in the United Arab Emirates. However, experts are not clear about why the utility company made such a decision.
Aside from the fact that instead of the decades-old pine trees that were cut down, the palm trees happily don’t fit into the overall environment, Danas’s interlocutors pointed to other controversial issues, such as whether newly planted trees will survive our climate.
Andjelka Jeftović, the president of the Association of Landscape Architects of Serbia, as she puts it, has nothing against the idea of planting palm trees in Belgrade, but is skeptical about whether they will hold up to our temperatures.
– The wish for palm trees to appear in Belgrade is legitimate, I have nothing against it. There is that in Germany, for example, where the climate is cold. However, these palm trees are not planted on the ground, they are mobile. In Versailles, you have the same story, greenhouses, everything that is made of palm trees, in the fall before the frosts, is sheltered in a closed space, where there are lights and where it cannot be frozen. In spring, when the late frosts pass, they are brought outside. I can understand that part, I don’t care, but the treatment they have to be treated with is like this. From what I saw, they were planted in the ground at Kalemegdan. If it is a permanent plantation, or they will remove them, it is not clear to me because I do not know what technology they will use to protect them from the cold. It is true that the climate is changing, but palm trees are tropical plants, says Jeftović, adding that connecting the canopy and protecting the trunks, which “Zelenilo” announced during the winter, will not save them, because they freeze at the roots.
Marija Jončić from the Faculty of Biology, on the other hand, says that the species that is planted tolerates low temperatures well.
– As for the species that was selected and planted, it generally tolerates low temperatures and is very easy to maintain, it is declared a plant for beginners, because it can withstand temperatures down to -15 degrees, says Jončić.
However, he complains that palm trees are often planted in exotic areas whose architecture supports that concept.
– If we look at the position itself, considering the already existing indigenous flora, as well as the historical and cultural landmark like Kalemegdan, the palm trees don’t really fit the space. In the area there are ancient specimens of trees and shrubs, which are of great value. That palm tree and the whole concept, rather than the old pine trees that have been felled, may not be the right choice if we look at the entire landscape and its composition that is currently in Kalemegdan. Palm trees are most often planted in our private gardens, because they are not characteristic of our climate, says Jončić.
“Zelenilo Beograd” stated in the announcement that six trees were planted, planted in Spain, and opportunities to grow tropical trees were gained in Belgrade, because the climate is changing.
“In recent years, we have witnessed climate change, which is slowly changing from the continent and becoming more similar to the sub-Mediterranean. Winters in Belgrade have turned mild without extremely low temperatures. In private gardens, adult specimens of palms, bananas, olive trees, etc. have been successfully cultivated. “The statement reads, noting that the planted species” tolerates low temperatures of up to minus 15 degrees Celsius very well, without suffering damage. “
Bakic: city administration in trance
– They are new nonsense of our government, now they are planting palm trees before winter, I suppose frost suits them? I decided not to comment further on his nonsense. The administration of the city of Belgrade is in a trance, in its conquering passion. Now that they have invented palm trees, they constantly invent some things to deal with them and forget about the most important ones, said architect Dragoljub Bakić.
