Tomorrow, the Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers will mark a holiday dedicated to the memory of Saint John Chrysostom, the great saint and reformer who is also known as the most famous preacher in the history of the church.

Saint John Chrysostom was the Patriarch of Constantinople and one of the three Holy Hierarchs. He is the author of the book “On the Priesthood,” and due to his exceptional speaking skills, he was nicknamed “Chrysostom.” Today he is appreciated throughout the Christian world, and it is said that during his life he was a favorite among the ordinary world, to whom he gladly addressed and interpreted the Holy Scriptures.

Saint John Chrysostom was a great fighter against heretics, and he frequently preached on personal and social ethics, defending the poor and exploited and condemning the rich and those in power.

Do you celebrate Saint John the Baptist?

After the conflict with the Empress Eudoxia, he was exiled to the place of Koman in Armenia, where he died in 407. His relics were carried by the crusaders from Constantinople to Rome in 1204, where they rested until they were returned to present-day Istanbul by agreement in 2004.

In many Serbian families, this saint is celebrated as a baptismal holiday in our country, and since he is one of the most learned saints, tomorrow you should definitely pick up a book and read at least a few sentences.

In some parts of Serbia, it is still believed that women are not allowed to collect wool, thread, or needles tomorrow, because Jovan Zlatousti does not want them to work on their holidays, but rather to engage in spiritual work instead of material.

In addition, in some parts there is a belief that the one of Saint John Chrysostom who breaks the thread, endangers his life.

“The light of the fire is brighter in your mouth, resplendent grace, illuminates the universe: the silver peace of the treasure has shown us humility, but with your words it commands, Father John Chrysostom, pray the Words of Christ God, save our souls” .

Except for tomorrow, this saint is also celebrated on January 27, when the transfer of his relics from the Armenian town of Komana to Constantinople in 438 is marked.

Although Saint John Chrysostom is celebrated in many families as a baptismal feast, this year many of us, for health reasons, will not take the opportunity to see our loved ones who are celebrating, nor will they be able to congratulate them live.
