When my client tells his version, this whole case will look very different

– I don’t know why they accuse me of the attempted murder of Miljan Mandic. We fought and he had no life-threatening injuries after that conflict. He suffered only a serious injury and nothing else.

This was declared before the Podgorica High Court by Ivan Kontić (30), detained in Montenegro on Sunday. Serbia issued an arrest warrant on suspicion that he brutally beat Miljan Mandić (28) on 24 August in Novi Sad, then broke both of his arms until he was rendered unconscious.

After hearing from Kontić, the court ordered the arrest in extradition for two months. He is charged with attempted murder, for which he faces a sentence of five to 15 years in prison.

Damir Lekić, Ivan Kontić’s lawyer, confirmed that his client was not clear why he was being charged with attempted murder. Defended the most beloved? He told me that he did not agree with the qualification of the act, because he believes that it was not an assassination attempt. Ivan told me that the injured party did not have any life-threatening injuries, but only a serious injury, Lekić said, adding:

– He also told me that he did not attack that young man out of obsession, but because he endangered his family. In that way, Ivan, as he himself said, only defended his loved ones. Rest assured that when my client tells her version of events in court, this whole case will be viewed very differently. When asked why Ivan Kontić fled after a video appeared showing Miljan Mandić breaking his arms, lawyer Damir Lekić claimed that the situation was not as simple as it appeared at first glance.

– Ivan waited for the passions to calm down a bit. This is supported by the fact that you have now clearly told the judge at the hearing that you want to go to Serbia, and as soon as possible, because you want to tell what really happened. Ivan mentioned that if the extradition is not ordered, he will immediately go to Novi Sad on his own.

At the time of his arrest, the perpetrator was alone and did not expect armed special forces to break into his apartment.

Ivan Kontić became known to the public after a video was posted on social media in mid-September, which showed him hitting Miljan Mandić on the head with his fists with all his might and then breaking his arms as he lay unconscious.

Kontić then fled and the police soon arrested his assistants Ivana L. (30) and Luka V. (38).

Some media reported that Kontić graduated as a lawyer and had been an intern at a law firm in Novi Sad since January.

At the time of the attack, he was the head of security at a casino in that city, and before that he was a member of the Montenegrin judo team.
