Patriarch Irinej, head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC), was infected with the corona virus and was admitted to the Kovid Hospital in Belgrade, the SOC announced.

“As part of the regular testing procedure, and after the epidemiological evaluation, a PCR test was performed on the SARS COV2, which confirmed that His Holiness is the Serbian Patriarch. Irinej is positive with no symptoms and excellent general condition”, it is stated on the SOC website.

Last week, Patriarch Irinej served a liturgy and service in Podgorica at the funeral of Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Litoral.

Metropolitan Amfilohije died as a result of the corona virus, and most of those present at the funeral and liturgy did not wear protective masks or keep their distance.

The head of the Serbian Orthodox Church is 90 years old. He was elected patriarch in January 2010.

Both the Bishop of Budva-Niksic and the administrator of the Metropolitanate de Montenegro y el Litoral, Joanikije, await the results of the PCR tests.

The bishop had a slightly elevated temperature and, as announced by the Diocese, he is in good general condition and vital parameters. He was sent for a home control of his health under the supervision of a doctor.

“The x-ray of the lungs does not show any change, while after the computed tomography it was established that the bishop has a minimal focus of inflammation in the right lung,” the announcement said.

During the first wave of the corona virus pandemic in the spring, Patriarch Irinej called on clergy and believers to respect the decisions of the Government of Serbia on protection measures against the virus, but numerous cases of icon kisses and use of the same spoon during communion rites.
