“WE WILL HAVE MORE THAN 60 DEATHS A DAY” Serbia ranks second in Europe in the number of new infections, and there are still HARD DAYS to go, this is what doctors say about POLISH HOUR

Today, all black records have been broken when it comes to the corona virus. But Dr. Predrag Kon, an epidemiologist and member of the Crisis Team for the fight against coronavirus, said there was still encouraging news.

Unlike the days before, when half of the newly infected bills were in Belgrade, this is not the case now.

– It is difficult to say that the epidemic is under control. However, what can possibly cheer us up a bit in such an unfavorable, sometimes even catastrophic situation is the fact that there are less than 30 percent of those infected in Belgrade. So, for several days, the number of infected people in the capital amounts to 2,200. As the first place where the virus suddenly became active appears to have peaked, the question is how it will continue. The problem is that it is at a high level and it will last. We will follow the trend, we will see if the number of new infected will start to decrease, but the number of infected will certainly not decrease quickly and that’s for sure – says Dr. Kon.

According to Dragoš Stojanović, director of KBC Zemun, there are fewer and fewer places in hospitals, but for now there is enough equipment.

– We have been treading for nine months. This virus outbreak is twice as serious, as we can see by the number of people hospitalized who have severe images. This morning, 24 patients were intubated, 20 of them with non-invasive ventilation, seven with “high flow”. Up to 98 health workers are infected, a colleague is being treated in our country, but the rest are in home isolation. There were 25 patients in our triage clinic tonight, and 15 are waiting up front. At 7pm, there were 355 patients and the capacity is 360, Dr. Stojanović said.

“The clinical picture is almost twice as heavy”

The clinical picture is different and the complications are much more difficult, stresses Dr. Stojanović.

– People come with bilateral pneumonia. The clinical picture is almost twice as heavy. We all call on patients to present themselves as soon as possible to the kovid clinic and triage centers as soon as possible, because the clinical picture is developing very quickly, he emphasizes.

Unlike previous waves, as doctors warn, this one infects entire families. Doctors have a clear message: respect for measures.

– If a person is infected, then they should stay in a separate room, residents should deliver food to them by leaving it at the door, but also not use the same bathroom, and of course wear masks. In this case, we were surprised by the sudden increase in the number of infected people. The hospitals are full, but we will find additional capacities. Now the lack of health personnel can be a problem – says Dr. Kon.

Serbia ranks second in Europe in number of infected

According to the number of new infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days, Serbia ranks second, that is, third in Europe, said Dr. Marijan Ivanuša, WHO director in Serbia. He also appealed to citizens to respect the measures.

– Serbia has become one of the leading countries in terms of the number of new patients. An additional difficulty is that the number of new patients continues to increase, says Ivanuša, adding:

– I also said in Slovenia that the situation with them is critical, and they replied that everything is under control. The situation deteriorated rapidly and drastically. The numbers you see are always late, due to the incubation period. So now we see what happened two weeks ago.

Kon: In the first wave, we saved 1,000 lives.

Dr. Kon also spoke about respecting the measures at Patriarch Irinej’s funeral.

– There were people who did not respect the measures. We’ll wait a week, so we’ll see. When there was a state of emergency, it was criticized the most, but we saw the effect. Then I said that about 1,000 lives had been saved. Why don’t we act the same as if it were a state of emergency? People, all of you who are over 65, don’t go out anywhere. Avoid any contact, even with the most born, be constant taking care of yourself and your life. That way, you will help everyone, especially yourself – emphasized Dr. Kon.

“We will also have 60 deaths a day”

Dr. Stojanović says that there were no patients at KBC Zemun who were infected again, but he again called on citizens to start respecting the measures “until it is too late”.

– For nine months, we have all been appealing: masks, distance, hand washing. Anyone who approaches the situation to understand how difficult all this is, is already late. Either him or one of his patients. There are enough sick people, please help yourself to help us all. The other day we had a guy who brought his grandfather and then admitted that he didn’t know what to do with himself if he infected his grandfather. Only then did he realize that it was getting late.

Dr. Ivanuša says that we can expect even more people in hospitals and even more people who will die from the consequences of the corona virus. He emphasized that the number of deaths in one day will be more than 60.

About curfew

When asked if he would propose new measures, Dr. Cohn said “we already have closures.”

– The service facilities are closed from 6 pm. We cannot know how fast these measures will work, but now there are no people at night and there is less traffic. Personally, I don’t think a curfew is necessary. As for senior citizens, they shouldn’t be jailed now, but just say: wear masks, wear masks all the time. There is no dilemma that it is necessary to wear masks not only indoors but also outdoors.

About the forms of treatment

When asked how kovid patients are treated in hospitals and what is the advice for people receiving treatment at home, Dr. Stojanović is clear: contact the kovid clinic.

– There are no recommendations, whether to drink honey or tea. I suggest that everyone contact the Kovid clinic and our triage centers to examine them: Dr. Stojanović.

How to celebrate Christmas and the New Year?

Dr. Kon also talked about how to celebrate the upcoming holidays.

– These are certainly important epidemiological events, so the risk of spreading the infection increases. We will then see what the epidemiological picture will be. If we are talking about travel for the winter holidays and around the New Year, I do not recommend it. But people decide for themselves. It all depends on the epidemiological situation. As for the families themselves, it is clear, as well as the celebrations. We will also be in a tense and uncertain situation during this period, which can be reversed in an instant. People must understand that it will not be the same as always – says the epidemiologist.

KBC Zemun Director: Recovery takes up to three months

When asked how long it takes to recover, Dr. Stojanović says it all depends on when patients call the doctor and what complications the disease causes.

– The duration of the primary treatment in the hospital is a few days, depending on the clinical picture, it can be 14 days, but also one or two months. But when patients go to receive treatment at home, with controls and medications that they continue to take, it takes at least three months for the person to recover. The body itself is looking for its recovery time – says the director of KBC Zemun.

Today all black records were broken

Today, all black records were broken again: 21,476 people were tested, which is the most ever tested in one day. 6,842 people tested positive, while 37 people lost the battle with the vicious virus. There are 225 ventilator patients in health institutions throughout Serbia, which is a new black record.

The new measures came into force

Due to the increase in the number of new cases and the worsening epidemiological situation, the Government of Serbia has prescribed new measures to suppress the spread of the coronavirus, which entered into force today at exactly 6:00 p.m.

In addition to the current ones, which mainly refer to the mandatory use of a protective mask and physical distance, new measures have been introduced that will change the way of daily life, and they mainly refer to catering facilities and other services, cultural institutions, as well as well as public transport. You can read in the separate news what exactly the new measures mean, but also what Belgrade was like when they came into effect.
