The situation with respect to the corona virus is critical and even catastrophic. In this case, you have practically no place to put patients, and that is catastrophic. The number of deaths and illnesses is constantly increasing and that applies to all of Serbia. Belgrade stands out on that issue, but it is too early to talk about safe leveling, but leveling has occurred, said Dr. Predrag Kon, epidemiologist and a member of the crisis staff for the fight against the corona virus tonight.
He also spoke as a guest on N1 about whether new measures should have been taken earlier.
– We are certainly late with the introduction of more restrictive measures. But not only the medical part of the crisis staff participates in that. The first notice on the application of new measures began in mid-October. Since November 6, the medical part of the Crisis Staff has proposed more restrictive measures. On the other hand, there is a serious argument regarding the economic aspect … When some measures are not accepted by all Crisis Personnel, it is just like that, everyone has their share of responsibility – says Kon and added:
– It is clear that the situation was not sufficiently understood. The story about the control of the measures taken began in July. The first was that it would be implemented, which is why it was said to be inapplicable, so the law had to be changed.
He says that in today’s session of the Crisis Staff, the decision was only made regarding schools and kindergartens, and that there was no talk of closing service activities, which is why the medical part of the staff is also highlighted.
– We ask for the closure, not at 6 pm, but at 5 pm, with a much more massive closure – says Kon.
“We all have the same objective, both the medical part and the Crisis Staff policy, and that is to reduce the number of contacts and the possibility of transmitting the virus,” he added.
– Later we will be able to talk about whether the work of a hairdresser is of exceptional importance. That was not on the agenda today – stressed Kon.
When asked why there are no more crisis staff press conferences, Kon said that he would come forward every time he was called.
– If someone calls me to attend the conference, I will definitely answer. On the other hand, we need to understand where we are. They are all people who are normally in the workplace, there is not a single person who is unemployed especially in this situation, they are all extremely committed. You don’t have the opportunity to meet as many people as you might hope. We exchanged opinions in groups, but it is no longer possible to spend as much time on lectures as it was previously possible – he explained.
About curfew
Dr. Kon said that there was no talk of the curfew today, and that the closure of service activities is a substitute for the curfew, meaning that some kind of closure is already in place.
– Meanwhile, it has become clear that the elderly are the most zealous in respecting the measures. Now they can walk what they could not before. Also, they are free to buy food. But all contacts should be avoided. Sure, introducing a curfew would have a great effect, but we don’t need it now. In the first wave it is. The curfew implies that nothing works. By shutting down service activities, we concluded that it is the same as curfew. Today, the decision was only accepted only in relation to schools, there was no talk of a curfew – said the epidemiologist.
The epidemiological situation is very difficult, Dr. Kon recalled, adding that the number of deaths will increase.
On the measures at the patriarch’s funeral.
When asked why they turned a blind eye to the lack of respect for the measures during Patriarch Irinej’s funeral, since there were citizens who did not wear masks, they kept their distance and kissed the coffin.
– On Friday I was not invited to any conference, if someone had invited me, I would have gone. I don’t know why there was no conference. Then there was the medical party that wrote the proposal on its own, so we need to understand what was going on. Then we were working on writing a proposal that we then presented. I do not have any position, I am a member of the Crisis Staff, so I influence the session itself and through communication with my colleagues. I have no way of influencing the system – explained Dr. Kon.
Asked when the consequences of non-compliance with the measures at the funeral will be seen, he said that it will be known in about a week.
– We saw in the television broadcast that individuals did not respect the measures. Officially it was said not to enter the mask and to respect the measurements. The impression is one, but in any case it cannot be denied that there was a breach of the measures and that there will be consequences.
About places in hospitals
He also spoke about sick health workers and the occupation of hospital facilities.
– Slightly less than 2,000 healthcare workers in total are infected, but that’s counting all those who are employed in healthcare. Without a doubt, it is a severe blow to the health system. I believe that the health system is very overloaded with work, it is very difficult, it gives more than one would think is possible. Unfortunately, we don’t have good news when we say this will end. But the measures will work. It won’t go that fast, of course. The hospital’s own capacities will be expanded with the opening of the hospital in Batajnica. We must prevent the virus from spreading, but we cannot expect the state to solve it on its own. The consequences will be measured only later, if we are talking about patients who are not kovid. So the situation is extremely serious – Kon said.
Schools are moving online
After today’s meeting of crisis staff for the fight against kovid 19, new measures were taken, that is, the decision that all secondary schools and upper grades of elementary schools will move to online classes from Monday 30 of November.
Students in upper grades of primary and secondary school will have online classes until December 21, when, according to the new decision of the Crisis Staff, the winter holidays will begin throughout the territory of Serbia. Prof. talked about the details. Dr. Branislav Tiodorović, epidemiologist and crisis staff member, and you can read more about that in a separate story.
Today all black records were broken again
Day by day, Serbia is breaking all records. Today, out of 22,231 tested, up to 7,579 tested positive, while 41 people died. There are 223 patients on ventilators in health institutions throughout Serbia.
Let us remind you that yesterday we broke the record for the number of people tested, up to 21,476 people in 24 hours, as well as the number of positives, 6,842. Yesterday, the record for the number of patients on ventilators fell: 225, as well as the total number of patients hospitalized with kovid, which is now 6,478. Yesterday 37 people died, one less than the day before, that is, on Tuesday. It is also concerning that up to 729 people were hospitalized in a single day yesterday!
