Jovana Petković (25) from the village of Žitorađa near Vladičin Han died in the Niš Clinical Center as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident in Niš.
The girl was killed by Nishlija MG, 20, when it was established that she was driving drunk and ran a red light before colliding with the car in which the unfortunate girl was.
The accident occurred on November 21 at around 00:30 at the intersection of Bulevar Nemanjića and Pariske Komune and Boško Buha streets, when a “golf” vehicle driven by MG struck the left side of a “BMW” car driven by Jovana. Due to the force of the impact, the vehicle completely disintegrated and, in serious condition, the girl was taken by ambulance to the hospital in Nis, where she lived for another eight days.
His father Slavisa points out that he can do nothing more for his son, but that he wants the driver to be severely punished so that another father does not experience his fate.
– All his life he was in front of our Jovan, on September 11 he defended his master’s thesis at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Nis. She had a job waiting for her in Vienna and she should have joined us soon because we have been living in Austria for years. We have an apartment in Nis, not far from the Faculty of Medicine, where Jovana stayed while studying. As I found out, that night she took her friend home, and then went to the apartment … She was at the crossroads when the guy hit her on the left side. The blow was violent. Jovana was taken unconscious to the hospital … She didn’t even wake up anymore – says a desperate man.
Slavisa says the family waited until the last moment for Jovana to win the battle for life.
– We visit monasteries, churches … We pray for their salvation, but we can’t. What remains for us now is to fight for justice for our daughter. There are eyewitnesses and cameras that will prove that our daughter is the innocent victim of an arrogant driver. We are asking for the strictest punishment for him so that no other child suffers in this way – points out Slavisa.
Jovana’s father says the driver’s family tried to contact him, but was unable to speak to them.
– They constantly asked about Jovana’s condition, they wanted to talk, but the most important thing for me then was that my daughter survived, I really couldn’t meet them – Slavisa adds.
Everyone who knew her mourns Jovan, especially her friend Jelena Simonović, who has known her since she was a child.
– She was a girl that everyone would want, hard-working, ambitious … Nobody pushed her, she finished university, she defended her master’s degree, she was offered doctoral studies, but she was thinking of going to Vienna, she wanted to be her own man. She has preserved my children, I cannot calm them since they found out about her death. We prayed for his life, but our prayers were not answered – says Nishlijka.
Alcohol tests confirmed that MG had 1.1 per thousand alcohol in his blood at the time of the accident.
– By order of the Superior Prosecutor’s Office of Nis, the suspect was detained for up to 48 hours. Within that period, he will be questioned at the Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion that he committed a serious act against the safety of public traffic of art. 297, paragraph 2 in conjunction with article 289, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code – said the spokesman for the prosecution, Borislav Radonjić.
The position of the Penal Code referred to by the prosecution says that if as a result of this act “one or more people die, the author will be punished with a prison term of two to 12 years.”
