The president of the Popular Party, Vuk Jeremic, evaluated in Novi Dan that Aleksandar Vucic will not give “a single concession to the opposition during the next negotiations”, as well as that the representatives of the opposition can force it if they are united and consolidated. As the biggest problem before the next talks, he affirms that the negotiating team must appear before the representatives of the authorities. “If Djilas continues to insist that there be ‘goulash’ from various party representatives and if we do not agree on a unique and elegant performance, then we will halve our chances of succeeding in that process. Performance in this dialogue, then certainly there will be no coordination over the elections, “Jeremic said.
It should be recalled that the dialogue between parties on the improvement of electoral conditions with the mediation of the members of the European Parliament, according to Vladimir Bilčik’s announcements, is scheduled for the beginning of April. MEPs have completed their internal preparations and have drawn up a detailed plan for the next two months, during which they will meet with heads of parliamentary groups, opposition leaders, government representatives and other relevant actors in Serbia.
“I think it is very difficult to follow who is with whom (in opposition), besides that it has become a circus show and I would not like to ‘pour oil on the fire’. As for the trading platform, it is ready, it is finished and it is no longer a topic. With it, on the recommendation of the Popular Party, you should not make it public, because if you are entering a serious process, then you cannot publicly state what you want to achieve and what your ‘red lines’ are. So, the platform is not a problem, but what is a problem is how the opposition should be represented there ”, assessed Jeremic.
According to him, the Assembly of Free Serbia put forward a proposal that the entire opposition come out with two credible negotiators that everyone would agree on. The party he leads accepted that proposal, as well as the Dveri movement, but Dragan Djilas did not.
“I still do not understand why he did not accept it. The logic is very simple.” If you send a handful of representatives of all possible parties there, it will be a nonsense from which nothing intelligent can come out, “believes the president of the Popular Party.
He points out that the dialogue process will be under the gaze of European negotiators, on whom the only thing that depends, according to him, is whether there will be any progress.
The role of European mediators
“To fully understand each other, Aleksandar Vučić will not make a single concession, we can force him and we must be aware of that.” European mediators can possibly force you to do the same, and at first they will prepare to observe what it all looks like. “If we act there in a serious and consolidated way so that we know what we want, then they might consider putting pressure on the other side to make some concessions,” Jeremic said.
When asked why the opposition is not more active and complex, he replied: “As regards activities, I could not agree that we are not active. We have spent the last years forming committees throughout Serbia, today none Opposition political organization has that. We cover 80 percent of Serbia. As for unity, that’s another matter. I agree with the statement that citizens are not interested in what my relations are with Djilas or some third party. Nobody is interested in that and due to objective circumstances, we should act together in the negotiations under the auspices of the EU. If we are not consolidated and serious, we will achieve nothing. “
“The offer of the Popular Party is still on the table. Let’s be unique, let’s be represented by two of us. Not at all, we in the Popular Party don’t even have to suggest who the two are, “Jeremic said.
He explains that his party proposed that the opposition negotiators be Slobodan Samardzic and Bojan Pajtic, and that it appears that Pajtic’s proposal “stabbed someone in the eye with vanity,” adding that it is his former party colleagues.
“If Djilas continues to insist that there be a ‘goulash’ from various representatives of the party and if we do not agree on a unique and elegant performance, then we will cut our chances of succeeding in that process in half. And if we fail to be united In this dialogue, there will certainly be no coordination on the elections, ”Jeremic said.
We don’t strive up front
He says that the Popular Party does not push itself to the forefront and does not insist on being represented in that dialogue.
“The one who sends representatives there to be in the foreground and parade in front of the cameras, to explain why there is no unity. “We don’t insist on being anywhere,” he said.
He cites better electoral conditions as the main objective of future negotiations with the authorities.
As a result of the People’s Party, he points out that it is the only opposition organization that functions in more than 80 percent of the localities of Serbia, and that there are no other opposition organizations with such capacity.
“The fact is that today we are the best organized opposition party, which has the largest number of people willing to assume some responsibility. From the local to the national level ”, said our interlocutor.
For Nenad Ristović, who heads a group of citizens in Zaječar who won almost 30 percent of the vote, he says: “Every part of him, had the desire to meet him, he did not accept it. I respect him, but I think that the way the government will resort to controlling discontent in Serbia is by allowing civil and local movements to channel discontent through them. “
Speaking about the election boycott and what it brought, he notes that without it there would be no elections in the next four years.
“And so it will be. And there will be opportunities to make a better result,” he said.
Commenting on the changes that should occur after the change of government, he pointed to the confrontation with some government representatives.
“There must be a confrontation, according to the law, with those who abused state resources and violated laws with devastating consequences for the people and the state in the previous nine years.” “Purification and the Property Origin Law, which would be fully implemented, are one of the pillars of the Popular Party’s policy,” said Jeremic.
