The renovated memorial house of Ban Josi Jelačić in Petrovardin was handed over to the Croatian National Council
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Croatia, Gordan Grlić Radman, attended the inauguration and handover ceremony of the Ban Josip Jelačić memorial house in Petrovaradin for the use of the Croatian National Council.
Ban Jelačić was born in that house in Petrovaradin on October 16, 1801.
After visiting the house, which was only bought half from the tenants thanks to a 600,000 euro donation from the Serbian government, Vucic and Grlic Radman had a closed-door meeting to discuss problems in relations between the two countries, especially the search and identification of missing persons, minorities and others. issues, but also opportunities for economic cooperation and in other areas.
The Serbian president declared that it was a “difficult conversation” mainly due to different views on the distant and recent past, adding that it can hardly be said that relations between Serbia and Croatia have been good.
“Since the birth of Ban Jelacic, during the nineteenth century, during the First, Second World War, the conflict of the 1990s, it is difficult for us to agree on any issue, find the same opinion and position,” he said. Do not think that it is especially important, and that at this time we have an urgent and more important job in the future.
“Let us understand well that only through dialogue, preserving the peace, security and stability of Serbia and Croatia, we will begin to build trust between us. Let us begin not only to listen to each other, but also to listen to each other, to put ourselves in the place of others and understand how others feel. Without it, we will create problems, insecurity and instability between us. We are too small to be able to afford the luxury of fights and any problems in the future, “said Vucic.
The Serbian president assessed that it is very important to deepen cooperation with the Croatian community, as well as that it is important to show solidarity in this difficult period, when we are all affected by the crown crisis.
Vučić said that Serbia will comply with the Croatian minority’s request for more meaningful participation in the government, adding that, according to the HNV, he would try to find good places where Croats, as he said, could help in the development of their homeland provide a better position for your community.
“I want you to always see Serbia as your homeland, no matter how much you love your Croatia, that you ask us for help, and we will do everything in our power and we will perceive you, not as someone who disturbs, but contributes to our development” . I believe that we will establish trust between the Serbian and Croatian peoples. “Let’s get closer and don’t look for a reason to get away,” Vucic told the Croatian community in Serbia.
The head of Croatian diplomacy, Gordan Grlić Radman, declared that the event in Petrovaradin could become a symbol of the desire to move further to solve all open problems and build better relations between Croatia and Serbia. Radman expressed his belief that an honest and open dialogue between the two countries could solve all open problems.
“This is a great event for the Croatian community here, but also a great day for Serbia. Today’s ceremony is an important moment in relations between Croatia and Serbia, as it clearly shows that we can work together for the benefit of all,” Radman emphasized.
He recalled that Jelačić is the most important person in Croatian history and that his house, where he was born in Petrovaradin, was bought and renovated with the help of the Government of Serbia, and he thanked President Vučić for that.
“I am convinced that this will contribute to the preservation of contemporary Croatian culture and the preservation of its historical heritage,” Radman said, adding that minorities should be full of ties in relations between the two countries.
Radman said that he had a very good and meaningful conversation with the President of Serbia about improving cooperation between the two countries, he assessed that last night a new chapter was opened in relations between Croatia and Serbia, and that he was returning to Zagreb with those messages. . in the future.
Dialogue must exist, he said, adding that he agreed with President Vučić that relations between the two countries are not good, but that they can be improved, and that it was agreed to resolve all open issues through the work of the commissions. This mainly refers to the discovery of 1,869 missing persons, who are being searched by the two countries together. Radman emphasized that economic cooperation is going very well and that he can be an example for any other cooperation.
