The United Nations, the United Kingdom and France are proud to host the Climate Ambitions Summit 2020, in partnership with Chile and Italy. This is a monumental step on the way to UK domestic COP26 next November in Glasgow.

They brought together leaders who are ready to take on new obligations to combat climate change and comply with the Paris Agreement, five years after its adoption on December 12, 2015.

Leaders from government, business, and civil society will gather at this online summit as the world grapples with the corona virus, but science is urgent as ever, telling us to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. We know that climate change will not wait. We need to act now, together, for our planet, so that we can build better.

At the 2020 Climate Ambitions Summit, states will present ambitious new obligations within the three pillars of the Paris Agreement: mitigation, adjustment and financing obligations. There will be no place for general statements.

These ambitious commitments will take the form of new nationally determined contributions, long-term strategies that will pave the way to zero net emissions; climate finance commitments to support the most vulnerable; and ambitious adjustment plans and basic policies. These commitments will help build a resilient and green recovery from COVID-19.

The effects of climate change are being felt throughout society. The summit will provide an important platform for civil society, youth and indigenous peoples, many of whom are disproportionately experiencing the impacts of climate change. Climate change must also be addressed through readable systems and that is why we also want to provide a platform for businesses, cities and other non-state actors to come together and work together to support governments and accelerate the systemic changes needed to reduce emissions and build resilience.

Boris Johnson Speech

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said today at the climate summit that countries could work together to radically reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.

Johnson expressed the belief that it is possible for countries to cooperate, change agricultural practices and reverse the process by which humanity has “kept the planet in a poisonous greenhouse gas heater” for centuries, Reuters reports.

“And at the same time, we can create hundreds of thousands of jobs, millions of jobs across the planet as we collectively recover from the corona virus,” Johnson said according to Reuters.

Speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping

China will increase its wind and solar power production capacity to more than 1,200 gigawatts by 2030, as well as the share of non-fossil fuels in primary energy consumption to around 25 percent, Chinese President Xi Jinping said, as reported. Reuters.

Xi spoke about plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in China at the UN virtual summit on climate change.

Speech by Pope Francis

Pope Francis today asked all countries to work towards zero emissions and promised that the Vatican, as the smallest country in the world, reach that goal by 2050.

“The current pandemic and climate change are not only affecting the environment, but also have an ethical, social, economic and political impact, and above all on the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable,” the Pope said in a message from video at the UN virtual summit on climate change.

He emphasized that the adoption of some measures can no longer be delayed and that a strategy is needed to reduce the emission of harmful gases to zero.

The Pope said that the Vatican, a 44-hectare state surrounded by Rome, will do everything possible in the fight against climate change. The Vatican is trying to replace all cars with electric or hybrid internal combustion engines in use,

It also started installing solar panels in 2008 and last year banned the use of plastic bags. Today, it recycles 65% of its waste, reports AP. The pope also strongly supported the Paris Agreement to reduce global warming and said he regretted the decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the agreement.

Biden promised the return of the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement

US President-elect Joe Biden promised today that the United States will rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement on the first day of his presidential term. Biden affirmed that in a written statement before the start of the virtual summit of world leaders, which was not attended by outgoing US President Donald Trump after he withdrew Washington from the Paris Agreement.

– The United States will rejoin the Paris Agreement on the first day of my presidential term. “I will immediately begin working with colleagues from around the world to do whatever we can, including meeting the leaders of the major economies at the climate summit in the first 100 days of my tenure,” Biden said, the AP reports.

He reiterated his campaign promise that his administration would try to cut emissions to zero “not after 2050.”

Ursula von der Leyen on climate change

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Layen, said today that the European Union is committed to reducing the emission of harmful gases by 55% by 2030, but that only 10% of all emissions occur in the territory of Europe .

– Climate change is more than a European problem. That is the question for humanity. Today there is a global movement for climate action. A movement that relies on powerful states but also cities, non-governmental organizations, people of good will. Europe wants to contribute to that movement, he said at the UN virtual summit on climate change.

He said that Europe stands ready to support developing countries and help them separate harmful gas emissions from their economic growth. According to her, it is not just about reducing harmful gas emissions, but we must develop green finance, restore biodiversity, create a new circular economy that creates new jobs and at the same time preserves nature.

– We have to change a lot so that our planet remains the same for the next generation – he said and called on everyone to cooperate.
