Vučić at the funeral – Jasmina Lukač

The main political event in the region, the funeral of Metropolitan Amfilohije Radovic, demonstrated that the essential political facts have not yet changed.

The first is that Vučić is exactly the kind of president of Serbia that all centers of power still need, whether as a rival, as an ally, or as both alternately.

Until the presidential elections in Serbia in 2022, there is little chance that the Serbian opposition will produce and offer a person who can take over as Vučić.

This fact runs counter to everything that has been claimed in Belgrade circles (political, non-governmental, security, artistic) for years.

And it is that Vučić played everything and everyone, promising everything and without fulfilling anything, and that both East and West were angry, and now the overthrow is about to take place.

On the contrary, Vučić is the only one who is still able to inject energy into the structure of the region created by the disintegration of Yugoslavia, and maintain it, of course, in return, by charging it himself.

And that is why it can only be overthrown if the political structure of the region changes, and that means a new balance of power in the world.

He was toppled, not removed, as impeachment is too soft a word for such a concentration of political and social power, which the Serbian president completed after the June elections.

By going to Amfilohije’s funeral, Vučić did three useful things for himself and for the ruling system of the Balkans.

First of all, he improved the image of his own voters, who see in him, in accordance with their feelings but also in accordance with the current policy of diffusion of cultural influence (language and script), the president of all Serbs.

Second, he provided Milo Đukanović with an alibi for not attending Amfilohije’s funeral and even more so for his attitude towards “litigation” as a movement of religious insanity.

The chaotic commotion at the funeral, the coughing of Patriarch Irinej, the dismayed face of Bishop Grigorije and finally an eight-year-old girl sitting for a long time next to the head of a dead person holding an icon – all these images will bear witness to despotism. Serbian backward, evil and despotic. Churches and traditions.

The funeral organizers have no justification because they allowed and enabled it, because rural funerals for the Orthodox are also held in a safer and more humane way.

With all due respect to Amfilohije, he was an old man who had a full life, and the outcome of death could have been predicted as soon as the consequences of the corona virus infection occurred.

The chaotic funeral of Amfilohije’s crown will therefore continue to keep the liberal Serbian public on Vučić’s side, no matter how reluctantly, which is of key importance to any attempt to overthrow him.

Because, however deep the gap is between the liberal opposition public and the people, and whatever they think of each other, in the end it is the liberal public that wins, although their representatives will not admit it.

Sooner or later, people always follow those they perceive or who have managed to assert themselves as a liberal elite.

Third, by attending the funeral, but without a major role except as an “ordinary” VIP guest, Vučić served the new ruling majority, namely Prime Minister-designate Zdravko Krivokapić and the Speaker of the Montenegrin Parliament, Aleksa Bečić.

Standing in front of his voters behind them, he confirmed the policy of cultural influence, so that anyone who feels Serbian can count on some help from Belgrade, especially financial.

Like Putin in the post-Soviet space, Vučić became a political inevitability in the post-Yugoslav space.

And with that fact, the region is entering its second winter crown, awaiting the changes it will bring.
