Serbia is making enormous efforts to improve energy efficiency in renewable energy elections, President Aleksandar Vučić said today, adding that this is an ambitious task, which must be pursued, despite the pandemic.

Vučić noted that by 2050, Serbia will be a low-carbon society with a competitive and resource-efficient economy, providing citizens with new green jobs and quality life in a climate-resilient society.

At the International Conference on the Fifth Anniversary of the Paris Agreement “Climate Ambition 2020”, Vučić emphasized that Serbia has developed its long-term Low Carbon Development Strategy with an Action Plan aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 2030 and 2050..

– We are ready to increase our results more than three times, by 2030, according to our National Determined Contribution to the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (NDC) revised – said Vučić.

In numbers, that means a 13.2 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2010 and 33.3 percent compared to 1990, Vucic noted, adding that this will be announced through the NDC. before the climate change conference (COP 26).

– Conditionally, with additional support, we can increase the results of the implementation of the strategy by more than five times – noted the President of Serbia.

To achieve that goal, he notes, Serbia is constantly striving to improve energy efficiency and use a higher proportion of renewable energy sources in electricity production, industry, domestic heating and transportation.

The dynamics to achieve these goals, Vučić emphasized, is defined by the Draft Strategy for Low Carbon Development with the Action Plan and the future Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, which should be adopted soon.

– We have a great task ahead of us and we must aim high, despite the challenges of the pandemic. By implementing the Climate Change Law, we will ensure energy security and resource efficiency, increase competitiveness and green economic growth, while reducing vulnerability to climate change and ensuring social development and environmental protection, he stressed. According to him, all these measures will improve air quality, which will have an even greater positive impact on human health.

Vučić also noted that the long-term costs of not taking any action in the field of climate change are 53 billion euros higher than the costs of implementing the Strategy.

He also noted that losses and damages due to climate change exceed five billion euros compared to 2000, adding that an “intensification of climatic extremes” is expected.

That is why adaptation is included in the national NDC and Serbia is working on its National Adaptation Plan, Vucic added.

Speakers include leaders from around the world, including British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Pope Francisco.

The summit was organized to discuss issues related to climate change, especially in light of the coronavirus epidemic.

Although many countries face economic problems, it is important that we do not forget to take care of our planet, organizers say.
