Vrnjacka Banja – water park – dry spring

The water from the “Jezero” thermomineral spring basin in Vrnjačka Banja, which used to flow in jets, has almost disappeared. The water from this now familiar and healing spring drips, and there were days when the springs were completely dry. The cause is suspected to be the private water park “Vrnjačke terme”, which was opened two months ago, not far from the spring. Although the water consumption in this park was supposedly reduced, it appeared in the spring only in drops, reports “Nova.rs”.

The “Jezero” spring water is used for therapeutic purposes, for diabetes and for the treatment of the urinary tract, but also for rinsing the eyes.

The water is called like that. by self-discharge, that is, no pumps are used to pump water, but the underground gas pushes the water to the surface.

But for almost a month, the water has flowed drop by drop. Many visitors, from all over Serbia, who come to Vrnjacka Banja because of this healing water, are now angry. There are huge crowds, queues, and verbal conflicts over who is next in line to fill the bottle.

“I need at least half an hour to fill a bottle of water. I’ve been in Banja for 15 days and it’s like that all the time. And there were days when the springs were completely dry. For this water, I come to Banja, but I don’t think I will. This is painful, ”says pensioner Milena from Paraćin, who came to fill three half-liter bottles.

The other citizens of this source did not hide their discontent either. While some shrug their shoulders, others say that it all started from the moment the water park “Vrnjačke terme”, which is located in the immediate vicinity, began to fill its pools.

“People came here for the water. I can also sit and prepare at home. But people came to Banja for the healing water. I am a diabetic and have been coming for five years. I used to be able to fill a balloon in an instant. I don’t know how where did the water go, “Dragana from Novi Sad told us.

Although some short-term tests were carried out on the impact of the water park on other springs in the area, it was concluded that its consumption of 2.5 liters per second does not affect the “Jezero” and “Slatina” springs. However, in practice this was not the case.

Immediately after the beginning of the filling of the pool, the flow of water to these two springs decreased, although it affected the “Jezero” spring more than the “Slatina”, although it is closer to the water park.

The control of thermo-mineral springs in Banja is carried out by the Special Hospital “Merkur” in cooperation with the Faculty of Mining and Geology. Božidar Vucković, head of the Legal and Economic Affairs Service of the “Merkur” hospital, says that in the last ten days there has been a decrease in performance at the “Jezero” spring, but that he cannot state the real reason.

“Experts from the Faculty of Mining will determine the exact cause. The local self-government determined in the contract concluded with the nearby water park how much they can pump water per second. And as established, that is respected. However, according to experts, it is possible that the cause is the continuous pumping of water in this water park in the last month and a half, which has not happened before. That is, the use of the spring water will have to be interrupted, “said Vuckovic.

Vuckovic says there is now an eight hour break at the water park every day. Experts from the Faculty of Mining and Geology say that the water level in the “Jezero” spring should gradually return in the coming days.

Milan Milojević, owner of the “Vrnjačke terme” water park, tells Nova.rs that everything works according to the regulations and that everything can be checked at any time. “Every night we turn off the pump. Our well is the deepest and is located at 650 meters. I maintain that we are not to blame for the pressure reduction in the Jezero spring. The municipal inspection visits us every day,” says Milojević .
