Stray dogs and wolves again attacked the herds in the Novo Varoš area.

In the last few months alone, they have slaughtered about fifty locks and the locals are asking the municipality and the hunters to protect them. They are afraid, as they say, of what will happen when the snow covers the mountain, and the hungry herds descend on the villages in search of food.

Bistrica’s Mihajlo Mirosavić has not yet recovered from the last attack and recently had new problems. Stray dogs euthanized eight sheep for him in August last year, and wolves recently wrapped him in black. In early December, they hit their flock with 32 heads and slaughtered the top 20 sheep.

– They chose the largest, and most of the ewes slaughtered were before delivery. I’m almost retiring, so I planned to work harder as a pensioner, but I can’t. I only have two sheep left and only a few sheep. It cost me a lot of money and time to re-form a herd of 30 blocks, no matter how much I have the conditions and the strength to see it. Mirosavić regrets it.

The herd was encased in a barrier surrounded by barbed wire. However, the wolves attacked in broad daylight when no one was home.

– The sheep broke the posts in a panic and broke the fence, but there was no way out. For days after the attack, I found them massacred in the surrounding forest, and some even a kilometer from the house – says Mirosavić.

Miso Pesterac de Celica did no better. He was recently euthanized by 12 stray dogs and two lambs, while he could not find two sheep, so he assumes they were also killed in the herd’s attack.

– There are about ten sheep alive, but there are visible traces of bites on each of them, several of them were seriously injured, but will survive. Fortunately, before the attack, I sold eight sheep for Kaiser, otherwise the damage would have been even greater. The herd that was in the meadow in front of the house was attacked by vagrants at dusk. I was getting ready to gather the sheep when four large dogs arrived. I saw everything, but it was too far away so I couldn’t help it. In those days, they also attacked the herds with the neighbors – says Pešterac.

Stray dogs go crazy all fall.

In Radoinja, Čelice and Draževići, at the foot of Zlatar, a dozen sheep died in his campaigns, while Desimir Spasojević of Murtenica was left without up to eight locks.

As a consolation to them, the Nova Varos municipality made the decision a year and a half ago to offset a portion of the damage to locals whose stray dogs decimated their herds. In 2020, three million dinars were paid on behalf of the compensation, and in addition to the ranchers, compensation from this fund is also paid to citizens for bites.
