As it is said, the Protector of Citizens, on his own initiative, after the media published a video in September showing the beating of a young man who was in Novi Sad on August 24, 2020, initiated a procedure to control the legality and regularity of the Serbian Interior Ministry.
The statement adds that in the control procedure, the Citizen Protector received documentation and reports from the Internal Control Sector of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, showing that the police officers acted illegally and incorrectly to the detriment of citizens’ rights, that is, they acted too late. clarification of the crime and search for the perpetrators of the crime as of August 24, 2020.
The documentation presented shows that on August 24, 2020, the health institution informed the Novi Sad police that it had received a person with injuries sustained during a physical attack by three N. Н. people, as well as that the police informed the Novi Sad Basic Prosecutor’s Office that same day.
However, the police did not react in a timely, conscientious and efficient manner, and they took video of the facilities in front of which the young man was beaten ten days late, determined the Protector of Citizenship based on the reports presented.
As indicated, the Protector of Citizenship was given documentation that shows that the Higher Public Ministry was informed of the incident only on September 2, 2020, when the criminal complaint of the lawyer of the beaten young man was presented, and that the police delivered the recording two days later. that the search for the perpetrator was announced only 20 days after the fact.
For all the omissions identified, the Protector of Citizenship asked the competent institutions to carry out a disciplinary process against the responsible police officers and to inform them about the result of these processes, as well as to act legally and correctly in future work.
