Residents of a residential area in Chongqing, a city in southwest China, have been passing two buildings built on a steep slope for years, unaware that a giant statue carved out of the rock lurks beneath them.
The builders recently discovered this imposing headless statue, which is about 30 feet tall, by accident during the renovation of the residential complex.
Images of this mysterious statue soon spread on Chinese social media, with many describing it as “Buddha.” The statue is now only partially covered in moss and shows a seated figure holding a round stone in its hands. The folds and some other details of the clothing are visible on the statue.
A statue from the time of the ROC
Experts believe that the statue was built during the ROC period (1912-1949). His head was probably destroyed during the 1950s, and the apartment buildings around it were built in the 1980s. They believe that it is not a Buddhist statue, but is related to popular religion. That is, next to the statue, there used to be a temple dedicated to the Taoist god of thunder, although it was dismantled in 1987.
It is unclear to many how the buildings were able to so quickly cover the historic statue, which was still known until 1997 and was mentioned in newspapers as a cultural relic. The culprit appears to be the accelerated urban sprawl that took place in Chongqing.
In recent decades, buildings have been built in that city for a growing population of more than 30 million people, sometimes at the expense of cultural landmarks. The city is spread over the mountains, so many buildings were built on the slopes.
