Tonight, summer begins, how much more are we going to move the hands?

Daylight saving time in Serbia begins the last week of March at two in the morning and ends the last week of October.

The idea of calculating winter and summer time is based on the astronomical circumstance that in January the sun rises only around 8 o’clock and sets at 16 o’clock. In July, when the day is longest, the sun rises before 5 in the morning and sets after 9 at night.

Summer time has been introduced to give people an extra hour of natural light, but as winter approaches, the day grows shorter and many people start and end their workday in the dark, with little opportunity to pass time under sunlight.

However, more and more voices were heard that this system is now obsolete. Some studies show that more energy is consumed under these circumstances. About 70 countries in the world turn the clock twice a year.

There has been a long controversy over this way of counting time. In the EU, the abolition of hand movements was proposed on the basis of a survey which showed that 84% of respondents no longer want to move their hands. And that, above all, because of the impact on health.

It is difficult to reach a consensus

In the spring of 2016, the European Parliament supported the abolition of clock shifts, and EU countries were tasked with choosing whether to have summer or winter calculations.

However, the countries of the Union have not reached a consensus on this, because it is not easy to harmonize the great space where the EU is located, and more important issues have appeared on the agenda.

The European Commission must carry out a detailed analysis of the benefits and harms.

Serbia is also awaiting the decision of the EU, which will probably prepare a new law on time counting, which will harmonize with the European Union.

Serbia started using daylight saving time for the first time on March 27, 1983. Since 1995, clocks have returned in the last week of September, based on decisions made by the Government, and subsequently a law was passed that harmonized summer time with the European Union.
