Serbian Orthodox Church and believers Sunday September 27 is the Day of the Cross, a great feast in memory of the day the Holy Cross was found and excavated on Golgotha and the day it was returned from Persia to Jerusalem. This festival is also called the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
It is believed that people born on this day carry the shadow of the Holy Cross on their weak shoulders and therefore are especially responsible for their actions before God.
It is celebrated twice a year, on January 18 and September 27. Previously, people fasted strictly on this day. Fairs are held in some towns. The biggest fair in Gornja Pcinja is held in Radovnica, under the church next to the Pcinja river, where several haystacks were erected that are used for the fair. People arrive early and sell and buy cattle until noon, and from noon those who want to see yours, be seen and have fun come.

Popular customs and beliefs It is an ancient custom that on this day cattle are covered with tar in the sign of the cross to protect themselves from disease. People believe that on the Day of the Cross, the snakes are removed and that they have been gone ever since. In all the villages, they pay the Poles, who tend the fields from St. George’s Day to the Day of the Cross, and who scare away the birds and collect fines from those whose livestock damage other people’s fields. You pay as much as agreed on St. George’s Day.
Our people believe that on the Day of the Cross, on the 11th according to the old calendar, or on September 27th according to the new calendar, holes should be dug for planting fruit trees, so that their branches branch out as much as possible.
In the vicinity of Leskovac, on this day, church people consecrated basil, grapes, wheat, and apples. That consecrated basil was held with an icon and then used for various healings. In many parts of the day, the weather is also predicted:
– If it is cloudy on the Day of the Cross, winter will be rich in snow, and if it is dry, next year it will be dry.
– If the swallows do not go through the Day of the Cross, there will be no strong winters. – Silent rain on the Day of the Cross portends a mild winter. – The thunder of the Day of the Cross heralds a fruitful year. – After a hot and dry September, a cold and rainy October arrives.
– September rain – gold in the fields, poison in the vineyards. – What “does not cook” August, “cooks” September.
– Like September, so is March. – If the Day of the Cross is cloudy, winter will be snowy. If it is clear, there will be dry frost. It is customary to collect and consecrate basil on the Day of the Cross. It is celebrated as a baptismal festival.
