Although this day is not marked with a red letter in the calendar of the Orthodox Church, John Chrysostom is celebrated as a baptismal feast and protector of numerous families among Serbs.

In Antioch, he was ordained a deacon and, as a priest, he dedicated himself to the ministry of preaching. He preached daily, on certain topics, but especially on personal and social ethics, defending the poor and exploited, condemning the rich and power.

In 397, he was elected Bishop of Constantinople, where he would soon come into conflict with Eutropius, the court minister of the Emperor Arcadia, and with the Empress Eudoxia, because he proposed a complete reform of the way of life, both in the Church and in the imperial court.
