According to tradition, the saints helped and cured people, without asking anything in return “for profit and enrichment, but for the love of God,” which is why they are also known among the people as holy silversmiths.

“Saints Cosmas and Damien, full-bodied brothers, born in Asia, shone with good works, for which they received the gift of healing from God and gave health to souls and bodies, healing all weaknesses and ailments,” he wrote Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović.

They were brought up in the Christian spirit and learned medical skills in their youth. They were careful in the free treatment that on one occasion Kozma got mad at Damjan for taking three eggs from a patient, and he did it because she had previously sworn to the Holy Trinity.

After the saint’s death, they were buried together in Fereman’s place, according to God’s revelation, and they continued to be miracle workers both for life and after death. People continued to come to them in illness and trouble to this day.

Saints Cosme and Damien are represented in icons and frescoes with medieval clothing, with coffins in which they carried medicines, and one of the most famous frescoes with the figures of Saints Cosme and Damien is in the Patriarchate of Peja.

By the way, Sveti Vrali is always celebrated on November 14, and in the church calendar the holiday is not written in red and fasting is not mandatory.

According to the canon of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Saints Kozma and Damjan, popularly known as the Holy Healers, are celebrated twice a year: on July 14 when Kozma died and on November 14, the day of Damjan’s death.

Popular beliefs

Prayer for healing

Ask the Lord to grant us, your unworthy servants, your great and abundant mercy.

Deliver us from all suffering and disease, because you have received from the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the abundant grace of healing, through firm faith, free healing and your martyrdom. Hear us as we pray and, through your God-pleasing intercession, pray to Christ God for health, prosperity, salvation, victory over enemies and God’s blessing of Orthodox rulers.

Bowing down again, we sincerely ask you to ask the Lord for everything that is useful in this temporal life, and especially what is necessary for eternal salvation, to make us worthy of having a Christian ending with your prayers, without disease, without shame, peaceful and let us be freed from the devil’s deceptions and eternal torments, so that we may be heirs of the limitless and blessed Kingdom of Heaven.

And you, pleasing to God, do not stop praying for those who approach you with faith; Although because of the multitude of our sins we are not worthy of your mercy, being true imitators of the charity of God, make us produce a fruit worthy of repentance and achieve eternal rest, praising and blessing the marvelous in your saints our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ and His Immaculate Mother. , and its warm protection, now and forever and for centuries. Amen.
