In all the temples of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the liturgy of Saint Basil the Great is served, which the church celebrates on the first day of the Orthodox New Year.
According to the Holy Scriptures, Jesus Christ took upon himself the sins of the human race, and the act of circumcision is considered a sign of purification from ancestral sin. Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović’s record says that, “Christ took a human body and endured pain for a certain sin.”
According to the history and tradition of the church, Saint Basil passed away in 379, at the age of 50. He lived in the time of Emperor Constantine, who made the freedom of confession of the Christian faith official.
Basil’s service, written by the saint himself, is served, according to the canon of the Serbian Orthodox Church, 10 times a year: on January 1, on the eve of Christmas and Epiphany, every Sunday of Lent (except Sunday de Ramos), Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday.
Many theological and apologetic works of Saint Basil have been preserved when the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates on February 12 (January 30 according to the Julian calendar), the feast of the Holy Three Hierarchs.
Many customs and rituals are related to Little Christmas, which is considered the end of the Christmas festivities. It is believed that one should not fight on Saint Basil’s day, because otherwise people will be forced to have bad luck throughout the year, while in some parts it is believed that today special care must be taken not to be deceived .
In some parts, it was believed that it would be the year of birth if it snowed or cloudy that day. In some parts of Herzegovina, the custom of burning the remains of Christmas Eve has been preserved, and in many Serbian regions ritual bread or basil is kneaded.
In the liturgical calendar of the Serbian Orthodox Church, these holidays are marked in red as a commandment of great importance for the Orthodox Christian Church.
