The coronavirus pandemic also puts mental health at risk, the World Health Organization announced as a warning, emphasizing that in such health crises, mental health is the first to be hit. Experts say that people who have been infected or who are in the vicinity of those infected have a specific group of symptoms, which cannot be classified under any psychiatric disorder.
The psychiatrist of the Serbian Institute of Mental Health, Vanja Mandić Maravić, told RTS that, thanks to the experiences since the beginning of the epidemic, we are more prepared and we know what can happen.
We will still be afraid
“However, this does not diminish the fact that we will continue to be afraid. It is this expectation, that is, the constant announcement, that there will be a jump or that it is happening day by day, which is actually even more exhausting, because the state of anticipation is something that, little by little, takes away energy and affects our functionality ”, said Vanja Mandić Maravić.
He added that according to research from the Serbian Institute of Mental Health, people who were close to kovid had a specific group of symptoms that cannot be classified into any psychiatric disorder, such as depression or anxiety.
As she said, it was mainly about tension, irritability and inability to relax.
“What is important to note is that if a person feels this way, he shouldn’t feel weak in some way and that only happens to him. It happens to all of us in a certain way, that is, to a certain extent. It is important to assess when that degree essentially affects our daily lives, “said Vanja Mandic Maravic.
Celebrations, meetings and celebrations “with modesty and in the family circle”
He pointed out that you have to be prepared so that next winter is not like the previous ones, which is a start of the routine, since it is a moment of glory, friendship and celebration.
“Maybe the keyword for winter should be ‘modest and in the family circle.’ So maybe when you say it, it’s not so terrible. Basically, we should just prepare so that winter is not like before, but that we can protect ourselves and that is, in a way, pressure, but there is also a possibility. It gives us some power in this situation, which is quite uncertain, “said Vanja Mandic Maravic.
He called on citizens who feel they have problems to call the phone numbers of the Serbian Institute of Mental Health, through which psychosocial support is provided.
“That would be the first step. However, it is a contact with a professional, which we can only get by calling from home. That way we can get some perspective, or advice, evaluation, where we really are with the level and severity of the symptoms and then assess that if you contact an expert, “stated Mandić Maravićeva.
He noted that the Institute of Mental Health is working at full capacity, respecting all epidemiological measures.
