Archaeologists and other experts have criticized the move, expressing concern that too high air pollution could damage the sphinxes.

A legal attempt to block a government decision is in court.

Mustafa Vaziri, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said the sphinx would be in wooden boxes until its official release, but did not say when it would be.

Tahrir Square was the center of the opposition rebellion during the Arab Spring of 2011.

The protests were banned and the plaza has been under strict police scrutiny since 2013, when the army ousted the elected Islamist president during massive protests against his government.

Last year, an obelisk brought to the Nile Delta was brought to that square, and the sphinxes were originally shipped from Luxor for restoration.

Egypt is building a new museum not far from the Giza Pyramids, not far from Cairo, where the legacy of the pharaohs will be exhibited.

The main exhibit is a huge statue of Ramses II, which was once in another Cairo square, next to the main train station. That statue was relocated to the suburbs in 2006.
