On November 29, 2020, customs officials, in cooperation with the police, prevented the smuggling of more than 16,000 packets of cigarettes with excise stamps from North Macedonia at the Horgos crossing.

This impressive quantity of cigarettes was discovered when leaving Serbia, on an empty bus and it went to pick up the passengers waiting for a replacement vehicle in the interzone, due to the fact that the bus they were traveling in broke down.

During the initial inspection of the replacement bus with Belgrade license plates, driven by a 53-year-old driver from Obrenovac, no discrepancies were noted, but the vehicle was sent for further inspection with a scanner, thanks to which it was found that something filled suspiciously the central part of the vehicle.

That is, behind the kitchen and under the refrigerator in the central part of the bus, the presence of unknown goods was noted, which have no place in this part of the vehicle. When customs officers removed the upholstery from the side of the bed that rests on the kitchenette, they realized it was a remodeled smuggling area, the so-called bunker.

That space stretched the entire length of the vehicle: from the back of the kitchen, across the floor, to the center, which was filled to the top with contraband cigarettes. It is about 325,000 cigarettes with special stamps from North Macedonia.

Later, customs officers removed the refrigerator located next to the side partition of the toilet and the last row of seats, and after lifting the plate, they discovered another bunker that contained a large number of empty plastic bags, but also one with 210 cigarette packs. .

A total of 16,214 packages of smuggled cigarettes were taken from this bus, so as their value exceeds the value of the vehicle, a used bus was kept in addition to the cigarettes, which was converted for contraband.

Precisely due to the alteration of buses for the purpose of smuggling merchandise, this act was classified as criminal, and a criminal process will be initiated against those responsible.
