This is what you should do on this day

Orthodox believers will celebrate today one of the four most important holidays dedicated to the dead: the Mitrovica memorial service.

This festival always falls on the eve of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, which is why they are called Mitrovica commemorations.

In churches, this day was always marked with the Sacred Liturgy and a memorial service, in which the priest pours wine over the grain and, after the service, cemeteries are visited.

Candles are brought to graves and priests conduct individual memorial services and read prayers for the deceased. If it is not possible to go to the grave of the deceased, a memorial service is served in the church. According to the teachings of the Church, on the Eucharist, believers pray in temples and cemeteries for the repose of the souls of the dead, and they also give alms.

The words of Saint John Chrysostom, one of the greatest fourth-century theologians of Christian preaching, are also mentioned in the church at the Eucharist:

Help the dead and mention them. Do not hesitate to help those who have left and offer your prayers for them.

Food often refers to the cemetery, which is not a church rule, but a new custom in our nation.

What to do today

Memorials are never during Lent, nor do they fall in Lent, because they are always on Saturdays. White flour cakes are baked, sometimes called “prosphoras”. Brandy, beer, wine, water are prepared and in some places grain is also extracted.

As many candles are carried as the dead are mentioned. Everywhere in Serbia, a priest goes out to burn graves. If by chance the priest is prevented from coming, then someone who presents incense makes incense.

In the ecclesiastical year, there are four general days of commemoration: Commemoration Day before Easter (before the beginning of Lent), Pentecost (before the feast of the Holy Trinity), St. Michael’s Day (before St. Miguel) and Mitrovica Day (before Mitrovdan).

Funerals always fall on Saturday, when services dedicated to the deceased are also organized, because Christ spent the day before the Resurrection, which is always celebrated on Sunday, in the tomb.
